As I prepare to depart from one Port City via Nieuport Aviation Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport to visit another Port city in Halifax, Nova Scotia for a series of meetings and to attend DEFSEC Atlantic - it got me thinking about the amount of synergies between Northern Ireland, and these Cities and Canadian provinces. There isn’t just the strong diaspora and cultural ties, with Canada Ireland Foundation Ireland Park at Eireann Quay as you depart Toronto’s South West shore - but there’s the vista back at the financial hub of Canada, where many Northern Irish firms are playing ball. Then there’s the working ports of both cities, the activity around Port of Halifax and their innovation hubs - which is similar to the exciting projects of Belfast Harbour and some of the superb companies like Artemis Technologies Ltd , 3DEO NI and Kinsetsu (who are attending DEFSEC). Definitely solutions for @CityOfHalifax and Atlantic Marine Inc around decarbonistaion of marine transportation and also how tech can help manage a busy port like Halifax and beyond. The ship building renaissance in Northern Ireland with Harland & Wolff is aligned to industrious shipyards of Nova Scotia - and the vibrant fishing industries of both regions are already linked via the work of Kilkeel Harbour Works and the @Nova Scotia Boat Builders Association - which saw G SMYTH BOATS LIMITED visit the provinces many fishing harbours last year. I’m excited to visit Dalhousie University later as there’s no doubt connections between Ulster University & Queen's University Belfast and Belfast Metropolitan College that could be forged here. The tech scene is already linked with the likes of TrojAI visiting Northern Ireland and Kainos working with the Government of Nova Scotia. I’m looking forward to connecting with many of contacts while I’m in Halifax - and I’m looking forward to making many more connections that will help build commercial and friendly relationships between Northern Ireland & Canada. Great to see so many City Deal five year highlights in this video. In Midlothian, achievements include the launch of Data Driven Innovation - a world-leading initiative that brings the latest smart technology into classrooms to help pupils prepare for a data-driven future at Roslin Primary School in 2021.   Also within the Data Driven Innovation theme - Easter Bush in Midlothian is a £54m project City Deal project. It seeks to leverage existing world-class research institutes and commercialisation facilities to make Easter Bush a global location of Agritech excellence. The A701 Corridor experiences significant traffic congestion which is likely to be exacerbated as a result of the development. A new A701 relief road and A702 link is therefore proposed, which represents a significant investment in the key infrastructure needed to support the major growth planned along the A701 corridor.

Today we celebrate five years since the Edinburgh & South East Scotland City Region Deal was signed. Watch our video that highlights some of the main achievements. With an investment of £1.5 billion over 15 years, The UK and Scottish governments - along with regional stakeholders - are committed to enhancing transportation, housing, culture, skills, employability, and innovation across the region. This investment is benefiting more than 24% of Scotland's population, making it one of the most ambitious deals in the UK. The Deal has helped employ 4000 people and improved the skills of 67,000 people. Strong progress has been made on delivering 3,500 new homes in Winchburgh, over 540 mid-market rent homes have been delivered by Edinburgh Living, nine new industrial units in Fife, with more on the way in the Scottish Borders. £3 million has been secured to enhance regional bus services, and over 700 small to medium-sized businesses have been supported across the region.   The Edinburgh & South East Scotland City Region Annual Report will be released in the following weeks. For all the budding entrepreneurs, this can be a great opportunity to learn the fundamentals of innovation and entrepreneurship in the heart of Silicon Valley (Stanford's d.school). I was a participant of this program in 2019 (then, it was called the Silicon Valley Innovation Academy). And during this program, I decided to shut down my last startup, that I had been working on for more than a year. Multiple startup events, competitions (several of which we won), and accelerator programs couldn't teach me what I learnt here in 10 weeks. Things like, what really matters in a founding team, frameworks of innovation thinking and exposure to what is already possible in the world. On top of it, I have also gained some great friends, across different cultures, through this program.
