I know its a Saturday…… but are you working? I read a recent article about Greece adopting a 6 day working week, a peculiar step that deviates from the trending 4-day work week model many developed nations seem to be moving towards. https://lnkd.in/g3eeCRDV It prompted me to do some digging of my own. And here’s something interesting: → Did you know that the Employment Act in Singapore designates up to 44 normal hours of contractual work in a week. Per a usual 8-hour work day, that actually equates to a 5.5 day work week 🤔 It is hence completely within a company’s entitlement to have you work a half day on Saturday (or every alternate one) ::::::: Even though most companies in Singapore today operate on a 5 day work week (thanks to the civil service who led by example back in 2004!), I still know of many corporate employees who clock more than a couple of “unofficial” hours on their weekends 🤷♂️ It does beg a question though. Is working more hours, actually more productive? . Apart from knowledge, innovation and competency, A key and often underestimated factor of employee productivity, Is Motivation. 🔥 An employee must first be motivated to find better and easier ways to deliver the same value (or more) in the work that they do. That in turn, drives productivity. . What, drives Motivation? Life. 🌱 Growth, freedom, purpose, legacy, enjoyment. :::::: To those who are toiling this fine Saturday, Do take a pause and think: → Does the Work you do on this day contribute towards a more fulfilling Life? → Or does it take from it? → What is the incremental impact to Working more? More Life, or less? Understand your work-life relationship. Own your narrative. 💪 ——— Need someone to work this out with you? I am Jevon and I can help you own your work-life narrative. Hi Jevon (Jiehan) Yang, In our Accounting / Tax industry we have to bill 6 hours of work time each day. We have very high charge out rates and with constant phone calls /interruptions that I usually don't charge, it's hard to maintain, so yes, I bring work home weeknights & weekends if I choose to keep on top of it all. You cannot bill personal time and when you do use work time to sort out personal issues you have to make up for it in your own personal time 🤷

Jevon, interesting isn’t it? I wondered would that strategy have long-term & positive benefits? The answer will then have to wait for more news from Greece 🇬🇷. Maybe more countries follow this approach? I know future-proofing workforce demands motivated individuals. We can simply asking ourselves when we have WFH and without it. To achieve positive goals, I believe sustainable ecosystem is crucial through motivation, education, training, and targeted strategy in labor migration 🚀

More or less, I think it comes down to 2 factors. 1) Are your employees present and productive? 2) Do the working days and hours match those of your key stakeholders ie clients, partners etc. Those 2 are important factors to consider when mapping out working hours. If everyone one else is on 5 day work week but you are on 4, yes it may sound cool but you are losing an opportunity to engage further with your clients and productivity wise, it is also subjective. Likewise for 6-day, is it really necessary? I guess the boss and team will have to make the call based on their context.

The Employment Act does not define full time employment only on 44 hour week. The full reading must be used instead of making it alarming through only the ceiling. Full time employment in Singapore is defined as anything between 35 to 44 hour week. The ceiling is meant to protect, not penalise the employee. The minimum is also to protect the employee for defining (the nath of) benefits. While significant number of companies go full 44, there are many who are between 35 and 44. Let's read the legislature in full instead of going alarmist. Dr. Elliot Lee

Thanks Jevon (Jiehan) Yang Ophilia Yong. There is good intention for deliver more for the customers and company. The decision on the number of work days per week/month/year lies in the Art of designing both the employees and customers experiences in tandem of the business ecosystem. 😊

Agree! Employees need to remain engaged and feel valued by their employers to be motivated. Implementing progressive initiatives and showing consistent interest in employees' well-being will lead to motivated and driven staff. This will help sustain businesses and ultimately result in business continuity and success. Like they say- happy employees, happy employers 😀

Great perspective, Jevon! I believe in balance. At Belov Digital, we strive for a hard work & smart rest ratio. How about measuring productivity in outcomes, not hours? Alex Belov

People who work smart and hard will achieve more than those who just work smart. People who work until they burnout and crash will achieve more in the short term than those who don't. And that's how corporates work
