This week, I have my proposal presentation scheduled with my committee! It's exciting to have reached this point of the doctoral student journey. My research focuses on a student's self-rating of leadership identity and capacity and how that impacts their academic persistence from year 1 to year 2 of college. Institutions of higher education pride themselves on developing the next generation of leaders. However, these institutions do not have a formal assessment to assess a student's leadership ratings to understand further how a student's leadership identity and capacity impact their ability to do well academically. The landscape of higher education is ever-changing, and now, SAT/ACT are not the only predictors of academic success. A student's leadership profile helps understand other factors that contribute to a student's educational well-being. The scope of my research integrates the Leadership Identity Development Model -- which posits that leadership is a group process that considers several elements and factors. Leadership is not always positional. Yet, students in college attribute leadership to holding a formal leadership role. I want to encourage students to think about leadership through a systems perspective.

We all aspire to be part of an exclusive group. When we enroll in a course, we need to think that our admission is well-deserved, based on our qualifications. This is (also) why standardized tests are a common practice in business school admissions. However, business schools have a broader mission than knowledge transmission. They aim to foster leadership, innovation and global perspectives. The admission process should look at more than just qualifications; it should assess achievements and potential. Where we come from shouldn't limit where we can go. Merit-based selection should target individuals ready to address the challenges of the business world.🚀

As we move into the second month of 2024 already, I found the 'Three Horizons' concept, presented to senior HE leaders on the 51st cohort of the Top Management Programme for Higher Education, by Professor Peter Madden OBE, during our visit to the University of Cardiff, a really timely cross-comparison on how I've reflected on my own development personally and professionally. When considering how the future looks and aligning my personal/professional goals: - What am I doing now that has the potential to bear instant fruits? - What did I do last year that has taken some time to fully resonate or come into consciousness? How is this starting shape the present or the near future? - What can I begin to do now that will help shape my upward trajectory and future growth? Is this laying foundations for the future I want to create for myself? ACAD is accepting proposals for our 80th Annual Meeting being held February 21-23, 2024 in Tampa, FL. Our meeting "Intentional Academic Leadership: Building Value in Higher Education" comes at a time when there are multiple challenges facing higher ed (the pandemic, volatile state governments, possible changes to federal rules, changing demographics, etc.), it’s important for academic leaders to be intentional and ready to adapt to any challenge. For the meeting, ACAD will focus on intentional academic leadership, which deliberately shapes the present and looks to the future. As leaders we must be intentional in our decision-making, planning, and implementation, both professionally and personally. Change is an ongoing hallmark of higher education. We are uniquely positioned to embrace it and move forward purposefully to build, or re-build, value in higher education.   See the comments section for a link to the CFP.
