Happy Pride! This is me, on my 21st birthday. As June winds down, I've been thinking a lot about what this version of me believed about her future. It was the 1990s. I had been "out" to my family for less than a year. I did not believe I would be allowed to marry legally. I didn't have faith in a future that would include children, and I assumed I'd need to consider geography carefully when choosing where to live. I worried I'd need to be careful about employment. Here I am, decades later, aware of just how much can change in a generation: I am legally married. My name is on my children's birth certificates. My employer has hung a rainbow of colorful balloons around the LinkedIn sign in our New York office (where I report most days.) When things feel dark, I remember: change is possible!

We have to think beyond training and hiring practices, and actually revolutionize the workplace itself to be a safe and equitable place where everyone can do great work. ➡️ “Making It” is a construct. We quite literally make up our ideas of what “making it” even looks like. And oftentimes when we finally get that thing that would mean we “made it,” it’s not all we’d built it up to be.
