I decided to leave the rat race exactly 12 months ago. I didn't have a plan. I simply knew what I no longer desired. My secret sauce was choosing to pursue the best version of me at all costs. I don't: - want to spend hours of my days on calls about calls. - want to have to choose between serving an empty entity or people. - want to "play the game" in the hopes of getting ahead. - want to run to Fridays. Instead: - I want to spend my time working on things I enjoy with people I enjoy. - I want to stop doing things I don't like doing. - I want to spend way more time with my friends and family (and be present in the moment). - I want to run to Mondays because I know I am making a difference in the lives of those I serve. Thinking about what you actually want in life can force different behavior. Take you down a different path. A path towards living more intentionally. Are you copying someone else's life? Living someone else's dream? Or designing your own? ☝

It conjures up the image of the futile efforts of a lab rat trying to escape while running around a maze or in a wheel. The rat race is a term often used to describe work, particularly excessive work; in general terms, if one works too much, one is in the rat race. This terminology contains implications that many people see work as a seemingly endless pursuit with little reward or purpose.” The problem with working to win the rat race is that even if you do win, you are still a rat. Perhaps the focus should not be on winning the rat race, but rather finding a way to follow your dreams and not participate in the rat race (unless, of course, your life long dream is to be a rat and win the rat race). Perhaps what I recall most vividly from my first lesson in tracking rhinos in the South African bushveld at Londolozi is that the guides cannot help you if you run. If there is true trouble and I resort to running, I'm pretty much on my own. If I can remain calm, I have an array of different options available to me. My expert guides can help. I took them pretty seriously given they were hauling rifles out of the back of the open air Land Rover to hoist over their shoulders. It seemed like a valuable piece of advice. I offer it to you today. When faced with a serious situation, do not panic. Do not run. Calm is commanding. No one wants to follow or listen to someone in a blind panic. We might offer them support, but we will not follow them. If life seems like it is spiraling out of control and you aren't sure which way is up, don't panic. You have an array of different options available to you. You just may need some expert support. Some help from your guides. While I don't require a rifle, I have many other skillsets available to you. I can help you see the variety of options. I can help you select the one that suits you best. You need not panic. Changing Your Life in a Millisecond I’ve had old injuries pop back up while preparing for my next Spartan Race. I used to just push through the pain, but that’s why they keep popping up. I want to be stronger for this challenging Spartan Race, so I must return to the foundation of movement to achieve this. But this is the same in life. In life, we pick our challenges, personal and professional, and by doing so, we create our stress. This is good because it drives us to grow. But stress also exposes old triggers, sometimes causing negative reactions and consequences. I have found this is where I missed out on many opportunities. This millisecond held me back from my goal. This is also an opportunity for growth by learning to respond instead of react. Don’t get me wrong, responding is still reacting; it is just a thought-out reaction. But what if you could use that millisecond to your advantage? What if you put meaning in that millisecond? What if the next time you do not like how you reacted to something, you find out why?    What if you could craft that millisecond? You can, but it takes time. Do you know how much time Micheal Jordan, Tiger Woods, or Mike Tyson had to compress into that millisecond that separates them from everyone else? They were deliberate. They evolved into the champion. They physically expressed that mental evolution. What could you express in your craft with a deliberate millisecond?
