As we keep serialising the 2nd issue of Border|Land Magazine, here an essay by Petar Vujosevic that looks at the changes around DEI, driven by macro-socio-political events. In the West DEI is entering the spectacle/fashion phase. The essay also explores the micro impact on career skills and paths for DEI practitioners. As luck would have it, the Washington Post has an article that makes the essay point quite nicely: DEI is getting a new name. Can it dump the political baggage? "At Molson Coors, “People & Planet” metrics have displaced environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals, and the acronym DEI has disappeared altogether." https://lnkd.in/e_4d562p Just like when Yves Saint Laurent cut the ties to its roots by rebranding as Saint Laurent Paris, DEI keeps further cutting ties with its past to remould/make itself into something more fashionable for changing tastes. This February marks the 56th Black History Month, spotlighting the invaluable contributions of African Americans that have shaped our nation's prowess, including their profound influence on our food system. This year’s theme, "African Americans and the Arts," underscores their paramount role in influencing cultural and culinary expressions. While we recognize the violent injustices rooted in the African-American experience, we also embrace the power of storytelling to pay tribute to the countless innovators, chefs, activists, scientists, families, and everyday heroes leaving a lasting impact on our food system and addressing environmental concerns like #FoodWaste. At ReFED’s 2023 Food Waste Summit, keynote speaker Stephen S. — host of #Netflix's docuseries “High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America” —  urged us to acknowledge the roots of food waste and the power of community in building better systems. He wisely stated, “An exploration into omission is revelatory. It will tell you who has the power and where the power lives based on who is omitted from the story.” As we delve into the narrative of food waste today, let's question: Who and what is being omitted? Plantations, a crucial element, often go unnoticed. Let's create space for everyone to join the movement, fostering growth that is just, equitable, and inclusive. In Stephen's insightful words, "The most powerful solution to food waste lies in ensuring everyone can tell their story and connect with the deeper value of food and community."
