Yesterday, Emily Mucken wrote a great post that I think needs to be talked about more. There are no true job search, resume, get hired now, experts. Recruiters don't know everything. Resume writers can't guarantee that their service will quickly land you a job; the same goes for career coaches. The market is in a weird state of upheaval. So, what value can you find on LinkedIn? Resume advice, interview tips, networking advice, and all manner of things. However, it is time to start looking at LinkedIn as a buffet, taking what sounds good and leaving what doesn't. The beauty of this is, if you try something and it doesn't taste good (doesn't work) then you can always come back and try something else. There are so many people out here posting helpful and usable advice for free. #recruiterlife #ineedanap #nowhiring

There is nuance in everything. Generalized Guruism ignores nuance.

100%!! All my candidate coaching calls are "I think this is the right move because of X, but the tradeoff to this approach is Y". Advice should never be static, always in a state of iteration and it's worth the time to check with multiple sources!

"Resume writers can't guarantee that their service will quickly land you a job" I always tell my clients that I can't guarantee them anything. That there's way too much outside of my control. I had a client who only applied for 2 jobs. Ended up with a 50% pay increase, vacation time increase, promotion, fully remote. Other clients struggle to find something. What's the difference? Probably luck and serendipity.

Absolutely brilliant! What works for a tech resume will SUCK for accounting and finance. Pick the stuff that makes sense and tweak your approach as needed. Love this!

Absolutely! Linkedin has changed into something it should not be. However, using common sense and goal setting you can maneuver through the irrelevant information, so-called experts, and the Facebookesque posts. Stay focused, seek out contacts in companies that you are applying for and make sure these are REAL jobs! When you see a job constantly posted and you have applied, move on. Craft your resume based on the requirements you constantly see on job posts (of course you should be qualified and have that experience). Use similar wording in the job description. Be prepared for an unprecedented amount of rejections. Unless you know the hiring manager and they are willing to help you DO NOT assume you will get an offer even though you are feel and at times led to believe they liked you. Watch for offshore recruiters and scams, there are plenty of them!

I need to go back and look at that post, thanks for the reminder. It's always a good idea to reevaluate your buffet and make sure that it's fitting for what you need, what you want to see, and how you can shake it up a bit to be more helpful.

It's a reminder of something I heard years ago and repeat to people I help, including my mentee - if you ask 10 people to review your resume, you'll get 20 different opinions. You have to evaluate the feedback and determine which strikes you as best for your situation. Hopefully among the feedback is an insight or three that help.

I completely agree that there's no real true path to YOUR career. We are all different people, with different things going on in our lives. Advice is just that, advice. Think about what's being said, how it applies to you, DOES it apply to you. Try it out if it sounds good, and move on if it doesn't work.

Unfortunately the "take what sounds good" part is what leads to craptastic dimfluncer content appealing to what everyone wants to hear.

Absolutely. Taking the buffet approach by doing a self assessment, being objective, and identify improvements where possible "for your given situation, background, etc.".
