“Just do your best. No one can expect more from you than that.” A list of lessons learned from 25 years in business wouldn’t be complete without one from my Dad. My Dad has been a great mentor and example to me in many ways, from childhood sports to parenting to business. As a third-generation entrepreneur (I’m now the fourth!), he’s shared many lessons. This one is probably the most important and the one I often still need reminding of in my moments of worry and self-doubt. From getting INCITE off the ground to the 2008 financial crisis to those early, crazy days of COVID, there have been many times when the headwinds seemed stiff and his reminder to just do the best you can resonated. When circumstances outside your control are seemingly pushing against you, grit your teeth and give it your best shot. If you are doing your best, then who can possibly expect more from you than that? But if you aren’t fully engaged and stepping up with everything you have…well then, that’s on you, and that’s where you should put your focus. It is a liberating and, for me, helpful way to approach life. We can all control our effort. Our best may vary from day to day, but we all know what our best feels like and if we focus on doing that we can live a life without regrets. Last evening, my son Rahul Ravi, returned home after visiting his childhood buddy Ashley Padubidri . Our conversation, as we went about preparing dinner, went like this ... "Dad, Ashley's mom mentioned to us that it's been 12 years since you guys finished your 10th grade, but it seems like it happened just yesterday!" and he added, "that was the amount of time we spent in school together and I can't believe time has flown just like that!" I said, "Yeah, and in just another 13 years, you guys will be 40. And in another 10, you and your class buddies will be in the 50's club". He is 27 now. For a moment, he stopped what he was doing and uttered, "Gosh! 😲There is hardly any time left and so much to do!!". "Now you know why it is important to make every minute count. Why don't you once again watch the #journeyoflife video you helped me make? You might once again get the big picture view of the future and realign your priorities and timelines", was my response. He and his buddies are not doing bad at all actually 😊. But given the safety nets in place, the foundations they already have, it is quite possible for them to aim higher if they want to do so. ******* Time and tide wait for none. If you want to look back in life, after getting into your 80's and 90's, to see what you have achieved and be happy about it, you need to start today. Make a simple list of things you want to see as part of your #legacy. Then create a realistic plan to make it all happen. Then, #execute relentlessly. The ⏱️ will continue to tick whether you do so or not ... I encourage my students/mentees to watch this video atleast once every year. Life is an engine with many moving parts. Your perspectives will keep getting more refined over time if you #introspect with a #positivemindset. 3 years ago, I wasn't even sure what to do with my life. Now, I am crystal clear. I'm: -->Building a company at the age of 20. -->In the best shape I've ever been. -->Have a lot of brothers from business & sports It all boils down to one decision—just one. A decision to make sacrifices like: --> Quitting college to focus on business. --> Sacrificing a part of my social life cuz I can't eat out and don't have time. --> not to fit into society (AKA mediocre people).
