Independently, and in my role as a mom, I participated in arguably one of the most important discussions at #Consensus2024 : data privacy protocols and how to keep our kids safe online. Below are a few takeaways from the panel: 1) We as parents can educate ourselves on the hidden dangers of social media and the impact these platforms have on our children. We could take on the responsibility of knowing our kid’s online activity and managing it. 2) Parents and lawmakers should continue to have an open dialogue. With each state designing their own online safety measures, it’s important to set high and appropriate federal standards. It would also be helpful to define certain ambiguous terms such as “self harm” and “cyber bullying” for regulatory clarity. 3) A federal government can require online businesses to verify the age of their users and hand down consequences if they do not observe these practices. 4) There is no perfect solution but Zero Proof Knowledge protocols (a Blockchain application that can operate on or off-chain) would enable individuals to verify certain information without revealing the vulnerable data points. 5) The narrative should shift to discussing the consequences of social media and the human elements of this story rather than focusing on data points and statistics. Real kids have experienced fatal outcomes. We can talk all we want about blockchain opportunities, crypto as a new asset class, NFT bubbles, price movements and market infrastructure. However none of this means anything if we can’t protect our kids in this new digital environment. Thank you Marc Hochstein, to my panelists Beatrice O'Carroll Cathy Yoon Alex Fowler Sebastian Rodriguez and CoinDesk for this incredible opportunity.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts from our town hall last week. It was an important discussion, and I appreciated the opportunity to join you and our other panelists. Nexus, a new company working to advance zero-knowledge proofs, stands ready to work with you and others interested in improving age verification processes, as well as enabling next-gen identity and access management systems.
