I am leaving Cboe Digital in mid-July. It has been an incredible run and I am grateful for the past six years. As I approach the end, it is hard not to think about the beginning. In 2018, an industry friend pulled me into ErisX, a start-up that was building a U.S. regulated exchange and clearinghouse for crypto. I fell in love with the team, and knew from past experiences that not all jobs are made of teams as great as this one. I think successfully building and selling a project during a pandemic had something to do with how great we all got along. We were the crypto people in derivatives and had hoodie giveaways to prove it. As we grew, we moved to an interim 4th floor office that had random electric plugs on the floor. If you didn’t look where you stepped, you could trip and fall, and while people tripped I don’t think anyone actually fell. The experience did teach me that you should always know where you stand. We had a large monitor on that 4th floor with a countdown to the launch of our spot market for about three months. We had planned to launch on April Fools Day but literally at the last second on that ticker timer, our CTO pulled our CEO into a private office. It was not to be that day, but we did launch the next day on April 2, 2019. In the last six years, I dived deep into the world of crypto as well as blockchain, exchange operations and clearinghouse regulations. I leaned into the new resources of a global exchange when Cboe Global Markets acquired us and launched three seasons of Cboe Digital TV (thank you to all our guests!) I worked on crypto spot, U.S. regulated derivatives and ETF marketing. I also parlayed my start up experience into an advising position at Northwestern University. In all, this was not only educational but also fun, and I am forever thankful for the experience. Also, I am honored to have worked with the high-caliber of people I had the pleasure of getting to know. We are whom we surround ourselves with. One of the things most fascinating to me about blockchain technology and crypto is the opportunity to build a new financial system. Growing up, money was a taboo topic in my family and childhood friends take note when I tell them I am helping develop inroads to a brand new asset class. I believe all of our experiences lead us to where are supposed to be and I am looking forward to what is next. *As for the hoodie below, I know I am missing some signatures. We tried taking a picture of the completed hoodie but the glass frame it now hangs behind left a glare. While so much has changed since then, I know who all were there.
