A recent global consumer survey conducted in 2023 on behalf of BENEO revealed that more than half of consumers worldwide are interested in plant-based nutrition for a variety of reasons. Besides being fully plant-based, there is also a big potential for products that combine meat with plant-based proteins. Would you consider yogurt to be an ultra-processed food? Believe it or not, under the NOVA classification system, foods like yogurt and whole-grain bread are considered ultra-processed because they contain added sugars. By this classification, yogurt and chips are both ultra-processed. Yet in our minds, we associate yogurt with being healthy and chips as unhealthy. So how can they both be ultra-processed? The problem is, what we don’t talk about enough is that not all ultra-processed foods are created equally. We live in such a fast-paced world that when we see the word “processed,” our first instinct is to label that food as “unhealthy” and move on. But when we’re trying to figure out what foods are healthy vs unhealthy or processed vs unprocessed, it’s important to look beyond semantics and presumptions. Just because something has been labeled as processed or has an ingredient you can’t pronounce does not make it unhealthy by default. Thoughts? There have been several articles written recently about the dangers of letting GenAi plan your meals. The errors commonly reported have included; weird recipes, inaccurate nutrition info or measurements, and meals with dangerous ingredients. My favorite example was a recipe that recommended adding glue to give the dish a "sticky" feeling!
