The chatter around the Congress “fake eyelashes” incident was varied from disgust to laughter. One thing we didn’t talk about: When Black women get dressed for work, it’s damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I got to talk to Rep. Crockett about the dilemma for Allure.
During a Congressional hearing last week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene mocked Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s false eyelashes, resulting in the barb exchange heard ‘round the world. As our editor in chief Jessica Cruel writes, the incident reflects the challenges that Black women face every day as they navigate beauty in the workplace. Read more as Cruel and Crockett break down that moment and the double-edged sword of being pretty in politics.
Important work here. Can we make her president already and call it a day. 👸🏾👸🏾
I went to allures instagram to repost and it isn’t posted yet 😩
Love that you covered this story. When politics and beauty collide.
You are 100% right about that.
JESSICA!! I appreciate this exploration in to this vertical so much... Thank you!
Incredible- love this. ✨
Jessica, this was such a solid read (no surprise there). Bravo!

1moIt is refreshing to hear Congresswoman Crockett's take on the incident in this article. I watched the full video to witness what preceded the exchange. Lack of professionalism went unchecked by the committee chair, and Rep. Crockett and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez had enough. Ideally, I would like to see them all debate about policy.
