LET'S GO!! 🚀 I had never worked in a startup/scaleup before working at Superscript. One thing I absolutely LOVE about working for a young, progressive company, is that there is so much work to be done in order for the business to keep growing, evolving and reaching the current businesses objectives. Very much journey, not destination 🗺 In past companies I would have been so far removed from senior leaders and ExCo, however, when senior colleagues are right in it with you, it really makes all the difference. It's motivating and only pushes you to go further to do all you can to achieve the best results possible 💪 Receiving not only business updates, but words of encouragement via Slack or in person gives me that "Let's Go!" feeling and I believe, this brings companies together, no matter what department or division you work in. 90% of the startups don't make it big. We've all heard horror stories about the success rate of start-ups. Here are the 3 top reasons why most start-ups fail: Going over budget. ❌ Missed deadlines and delays. ❌ Wasted financial and other resources. ❌ They all start the same: ✔️ They have an idea. ✔️ They have a great team. ✔️ They have the right attitude. ✔️ They start building the MVP (minimum viable product). And that's where things start going south. It cannot always be attributed to poor planning. Most often it fails because of SCOPE CREEP. 🚫 So, how do you avoid scope creep? Here are 5 ways how ⬇️ 1. Define the scope: Don't lose sight of your MVP. Keep it simple and easy to use. Stop adding features along the way. 2. Plan and validate your product early: Product validation isn't only positive feedback. Make a few sales with your earliest versions. Competitor analysis - demand is there. 3. Limit iterations: (Goes against all start-ups advice, I know) Limit based on budget, time and resources. Define a goal and success metric for each. This will help you avoid feature creep. 4. Keep it simple (MoSCoW principle): Must-have features are necessary and functional. Should-have features are nice to include. Could-have features are added bonus. 5. Document all changes: Limited scope and iteration can still lead to scope creep. Document all your moves, changes, and actions. Maintains transparency and communication. A year and a half after founding a startup, here are some the lessons I’ve learned: - You need to be your own greatest motivator. - There’s no instant rewards. Keep pushing & be patient - Learning to make hard decisions and learning to let things unfold are equally as important. - Listening to your customers and encouraging them to share their thoughts is key. There’s still a lot of work and a whole lot to learn in this startup journey, and the only thing I can say is - Bring it on. Everytime I come back to work in the start-up ecosystem, there are 5 positives that just make it worth it - ✅ Pace of learning The number of launches, production issues, customer feedback and overall iterations on a software are happening at 10x the pace of any mid -> large sized company. Only you yourself limit your uptake. ✅ Ownership There is enough on everyone's plate. You can literally pick up any work and people will cheer for you. ✅ Collaboration There is no way to move forward unless you have folks around you partnering with you. ✅ Forging Ahead The flywheel will trudge you along, better find a way to avoid that bump for yourself and people around you. ✅ Self-actualization You have good days, you have bad days but at end of every day you end up knowing that you have picked up either a domain skill or a lifeskill. Success in life and business begins by focusing on death. I go through this idea at the beginning of my engagements with clients. It helps us be on the same page, but mostly helps founders, PMs, Execs (etc) focus on what's really important while going full speed ahead and doing all the firefighting. Let's explore some ideas... 1. 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 Start by thinking about the endgame. The concept of death serves as a reminder that our time is limited... particularly when building a startup. It forces us to ask critical questions: ➡️ What is the endgame?  ➡️ Why are you doing this?  ➡️ What does success look like? 2. F𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 Once we've established our endgame, the next step is to focus on the journey itself. ➡️ What do we need to get there?  ➡️ What are the struggles we need to overcome?  ➡️ What do we need to prevent from happening? 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 Ultimately, success in both life and business is about making choices that align with our objectives. The concept of "starting with the end in mind" is about reverse engineering our goals. It's akin to setting a destination on a GPS and planning the best route. By knowing where we want to end up, we can make informed decisions about the steps to take along the way. And that's why in many instances, the answer to all of these questions is a resounding "It depends." First, define What's the end goal. And then work backwards from that on how do you get there. Success in life and business begins by focusing on death. HouseBoon has grown by 60% over the previous month. Throughout the month, we noticed the following critical points:   Process-oriented results are better than result-oriented processes; why is that?   Problem statements and solutions are very individualised concepts in the early phases. By the time we complete the user journey multiple times, or, in short, we get a few hundred paying users, we find there are many things we need to modify along the user journey.   We focus on the end result at first, but as we expand, we realise that we need a good process in every area.   So, what is the good process?   The basic definition of a good process is that one should be able to repeat it without any chance of potential errors.   We were failing to deliver on our commitments to the customer at many points due to a lack of a team, but after assembling a powerhouse of people and thoroughly examining the process, we broke it down into pieces and started creating a good process.   Now we are entertaining customers promptly, resolving their queries as soon as possible, and can focus on better and bigger things ahead. The 7-step playbook for early-stage startup & SaaS product founders 👇 1️⃣ Don't wait until you're ready Just get started! Somewhere is better than nowhere. Perfection stifles progress! 2️⃣ Fall in love with the problem Spend time determining whether the problem you're solving is big enough. 3️⃣ Make sure you have a product people want Talk to prospective customers and listen to their pain points. 4️⃣ Test ideas before investing in them Don't let yourself get carried away with too many shiny new ideas. Test them and find clarity. 5️⃣ Create a prototype You don't always need to build software. Test your ideas using a scrappy prototype first, and you'll thank me later! 6️⃣ Be prepared to get things wrong Learn from those mistakes, find a new direction, and pivot your ideas. 7️⃣ Market your product early on Let the world know it exists.
