*The Inner-Most Cave* • A point in a protagonist's journey in which they are forced to make a choice to either face the enemy, oftentimes on their turf, in a situation that everyone around them *swears* is impossible, OR...to not. To turn around and give up. • There will always be more people that are going to tell you "that's impossible" than there are those who will blow wind in your sails (or, sales). • The truth is, some things are impossible. However, there are too many examples of people who overcame unfavorable odds to achieve what was previously considered to be "impossible." • How do you know if what you're trying to do is impossible, or "impossible?" • In a story, when the protagonist decides to enter into the inner-most cave, he or she usually doesn't have a choice. Not because they're pushed into a corner, but because they have an inextinguishable burning desire or inclination to DO whatever it is they're going to do. For Tommy John, it was to push the surgeons to develop a new procedure to extend his career. Then, it was to show up to spring training to try out for the team after being cut following his 25th season. Then, it was to save his son. • So, adequately answering the question requires an honest look at oneself. If you feel an insatiable inclination to accomplish a specific goal, if it feels as integral to your existence as a UCL is to a pitcher's career, then it is most certainly NOT impossible.
