CEO of AlixLabs AB & Senior Technology Analyst at TECHCET LLC CA & Adjunct Associate Professor at Linköping University
Tetsuro Higashi, the Chairman of Rapidus Corporation, conveys a message of optimism and strategic vision for Japan's semiconductor industry, despite acknowledging its current lag of up to two decades behind global leaders. His confidence, expressed at the Semicon Japan trade event, is rooted in the impending technological shift towards the gate-all-around transistor architecture, which he believes will level the playing field for new entrants like Rapidus. This shift to smaller, more efficient chip production under 2 nanometers represents a significant opportunity for Japan to close the gap with industry giants such as #TSMC and #Intel. The government's substantial investment in Rapidus, combined with the support of Japan's established machine and chemical supply companies, positions the country to capitalize on this transition. Higashi's vision extends beyond immediate technological advancements, aiming to inspire a new generation and rejuvenate Japan's role in the global semiconductor market, thereby infusing a sense of hope and anticipation for the future of Japan's tech industry. #japan #SEMICONJapan SEMI #semiconductor https://lnkd.in/dPtSDKT9

CHIP INDUSTRY HUB GROWS IN SOUTHWESTERN JAPAN WITH TSMC'S ARRIVAL If you find value in my daily industry news updates, I think you'll appreciate the insights on Moov Technologies Inc.'s website. To stay updated with industry shifts, check out the link in the comments. Kyushu's Semiconductor Surge: Japan's southwestern island, Kyushu, is emerging as a global semiconductor epicenter. Highlights: TSMC's 1 trillion yen ($6.7B) project in Kikuyo, signaling significant faith in the region. Major Japanese suppliers like Ebara and Tokyo Electron are ramping up investments. International players like ASML and Lam Research are expanding operations. Analysis: This sudden clustering suggests a strategic move by industry leaders. Kyushu's location, combined with Japan's tech-friendly infrastructure, makes it an ideal hub. Furthermore, by congregating, companies can optimize supply chains, collaborate more closely, and capitalize on shared resources and talent pools. Tokyo Electron's aspiration to double operations and Screen Holdings' training center underscore a long-term vision and investment in human capital. The move by giants like Sony and Rohm cements Kyushu's growing significance in the chip industry. This convergence will not only boost the local economy but also fortify Japan's global tech footprint. For stakeholders, this is a promising sign of robust industry growth and innovative collaborations ahead. #Nokia and its research arm Bell Labs have been collaborating with every manner of company and institution to investigate 6G’s potential. #6G, the next frontier in wireless networking, must leave a lasting impression. To achieve this, we must forge partnerships, embrace collaboration, and lend an ear even to those whose views diverge from ours. Through collective effort, 6G will emerge as a force to reckon with—not just in terms of sheer power, but also in its inclusive reach. It will touch the lives of countless businesses, numerous industries, and multitudes of people. The more we weave #inclusivity into the fabric of 6G, the more impactful it will become.
If we’re not solving real-world problems, can we truly call ourselves innovators? By partnering with companies and institutions as diverse as NVIDIA, Qualcomm, New York University, Bosch and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) (to name a few), Nokia will ensure that the next generation of wireless communications has a genuine impact on business, industry and society. Director Field Intelligence Element, National Security Sciences Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
‘Dr. Chang, who has been regularly sharing that globalization is over, also commented on this particular topic. According to him, globalization in the semiconductor industry is officially over, as countries are now concerned with localizing chip production to ensure that there is no disruption in case of a conflict… …He shared the example of the U.S. to add color, highlighting that American investment in the chip sector has declined over the years and led to others such as Taiwan's TSMC and South Korea's Samsung Electronics rising to prominence in the industry. He likened the early days of the U.S. chip sector, when large investments propelled America as the dominant player in the industry, to Taiwan, as part of statements that indirectly warned that Taiwan could potentially lose its prominence today due to 'policy adjustments.'’ https://lnkd.in/gZzAvWXT

Provoking thoughts on tech and humanity, and leveraging my Silicon Valley DNA to help build more compassionate businesses. We are only human, after all the talk about AI.
What’s the difference between a great conference and an exceptional one? Is it the number of booths? The floor space covered? The location? For the inaugural International Semiconductor Executive Summits SEA edition which I attended recently in Penang, it’s the speakers. There were no booths, no products to pitch, no posters about products. What's the big difference? The topics were about technology and what is currently being worked on. It was fascinating to hear about the new and current tech they were working on and putting in place and how fast they are being adopted in the industry. Teng Chow Ooi of Intel spoke about advanced packaging and how this is reshaping the way they are now building their new factories. Packaging used to be back-end of line processes. Now even the front-end fabs are getting involved. Food for thought about what it means to OSAT businesses. Dr. Abderrazzaq Ifis from AT&S would like to get more involved with their collaborators. So, there is hope yet. He also raised the opportunity for adding more value to substrates as the advanced packaging piles more on top of the wafer using front end processes. They plan to build this R&D capability in their new 1 km long, 10-building factory locally. WD showed off their ‘Lighthouse’ factory, and how 4IR technologies enabled a completely lights-out production line in Penang. Even more opportunities ahead. Amkor talked about how quickly they are responding to the technology trends, advances and customer needs. Who cares about Moore’s Law now that there are new frontiers to explore? Speaker after speaker shared what they are doing to push the technology envelope for semicon. Suffice to say they are mostly local speakers and a few overseas: from Intel, TSMC, Infineon, Micron, Amkor, Inari, WD, AT&S, LAM Research, ST Micro, OnSemi, SilTerra, Broadcom, and many more like Pearl Semiconductor and Xiamen Sky Semiconductor. The focus is on Malaysia and Penang to be a neutral middle ground as geo-political tensions increase elsewhere. New factories are sprouting up with billions of dollars investment already announced and in progress. For the full list, check out InvestPenang's website. The enthusiasm and passion of the crowd was unmistakable. The networking felt different from a conventional conference too - no one was hard-selling about how their products would help you. Discussions at lunch and cocktails were about technology and where we need to go - together. Thank you, Salah Nasri, for coming to Penang for your inaugural ISES SEA 2023. Thank you, Dato Seri Lee Kah Choon for bringing them here. Thank you also for inviting me to represent PSDC as a panelist.
