After an amazing 19.5 years, today is my last day at Kuoni. I started my career at Kuoni as a Sales Consultant in Manchester. I was ambitious but hadn't a clue what I wanted to do for a career. I decided university wasn’t for me and fell into the role after globe trotting for a few years after I left college. The warmth of the team and passion for our customers at Kuoni has never faltered. I always had bosses and leaders who were eager to listen, championed me and supported my desire to move up the ranks. I soon moved to London for a few months to support the new Kensington store opening then fulfilled my dream to work as a Business Development Executive for the Trade relations team. That was a career defining period for me. I loved driving my palm tree wrapped car to all corners of the north. The role taught me so much about relationship building, negotiation and engaging an audience and it built my confidence to move into a leadership role (aided by a dear colleague who gave me a nudge to apply for Manchester store manager). After briefly running the Manchester store alongside my Trade role, I became involved in the rapid expansion of the Kuoni store network. I went from project managing the store openings to Regional Manager and then quite quickly went on run the store network. As the role grew, I took on Trade and later launched a Virtual contact centre born out of the pandemic.  I loved every minute of the variety and learned so much. As well as my Trade days, building the retail team from scratch and watching them flourish was one of biggest career highlights. The Kuoni team’s passion and talent are what makes the business so special. Creating a thriving sales culture and empowering the team to deliver an outstanding customer experience were our obsession.  There are SO many achievements to share.. We developed a ‘People agenda’ designed to deliver a best in class experience for our team which championed recognition and personal growth. There’s our Little Book of Wow, an annual collection of treasured moments that we create for our customers.   We built our unique service philosophy ‘The Kuoni Way’, designed to empower the team to deliver exceptional service at every touch point making us famous for delivering the best customer experience in the industry. I am so proud of my career path from Sales Consultant to Sales Director over my 19 year career at Kuoni. This is testament to an incredible culture that nurtures and recognises homegrown talent. After a hugely fulfilling career, and having learned so much, I believe I have a lot to share in my new chapter as a Leadership Coach (more on that to come soon!).   But for now, an incredible chapter comes to a close. To all of the wonderful people who have been a part of my Kuoni journey, those who have mentored, supported and inspired me, those who I have laughed until I cried with (you know who you are), THANK YOU for absolutely everything.

Meet the Team - Callum Walton - Sales Manager Our company Sales Manager, Callum Walton, talks about his experiences with networking, career progression and his sales approach in this week's Meet the Team! Cal began his journey back in 2022 as a Warehouse Operative for our sister company, GameVerge, and quickly progressed to Warehouse Manager in a matter of months. By combining his previous retail management experience with his newfound knowledge, Cal went on to become the head of our sales arm with the launch of Verge Distribution. "How do you engage in industry networking to expand your connections and stay informed about market trends?" I would consider myself lucky that both of these job aspects can be achieved via LinkedIn, especially by joining some of the groups you find on here. There's the opportunity to join a niche group and network with like-minded professionals who you can then connect with, converse with and learn from. "What attracted you to sales and, specifically, to working with Verge Distribution?" Before working with Alex at GameVerge, my career path was based almost entirely around retail. I used to thoroughly enjoy the service aspect in retail, however, during my time as GameVerge’s Warehouse Manager I acquired a deep knowledge of the company's products and operations. It was only natural for me to progress further into the role of Sales Manager following the launch of Verge Distribution! I genuinely feel helpful in this role with our target market being smaller retailers. My job allows me to not just sell items to customers, but help them understand how our products can fit into their portfolio and what steps they can take to maximise performance. "In what ways do you incorporate the brand's values into your sales approach?" With 24 years in the FMCG trade, my journey began as a Sales Representative and evolved into various management roles. My experience spans from the independent wholesale sector to corporate retail, having interacted with all major retail outlets and the largest wholesalers from the Western Cape to Port Elizabeth. Throughout my career, whether as a Sales Representative, Sales Manager, or Regional Manager, I have always maintained integrity by never disparaging a competitor’s product without solid evidence. It's disheartening to see that many of today's Sales Representatives resort to badmouthing their competition to make a sale. This negative trend has only worsened over the years. Modern Sales Representatives need proper training and guidance. They should focus on effective selling strategies and ensuring their products sell based on merit rather than undermining competitors. Key strategies include ensuring strong forwardshare, maintaining competitive pricing, executing promotional activities, and utilizing marketing tools effectively amongst others. Most importantly, building genuine and honest relationships with customers is crucial. Contrary to some beliefs about the sales industry, I adhere strictly to these principles. I aim to achieve targets without resorting to dishonest tactics or overstocking customers. To the new generation of Sales Representatives: be honest, avoid deceit, and strive to live your professional life without regrets. Rather than putting a cliche proverb about team work, I would like to pen down a heartfelt thank you to my Senior Managers and my relentless sales team making things happen in the market, day in & day out. As sales, our work is never easy. We work in 50 degrees everyday. We face the happiness or wrath of a customer everyday. We are the central function coordinating with all the other functions everyday. We are the function who is tasked with stretched targets, brilliant launches, important visits, market intelligence, tough negotiations and what not. There are moments of despair that come up in every disagreement with the store managers, missed POs, wrong informations, bad meetings, missed deliveries and missed targets. But then, there are also moments like these, where we smile and laugh at all of the above knowing we handled it well and we surpassed all odds to deliver our yearly objectives. From each one of you, I have learnt a bit about not giving up, not losing control, not being sad and more importantly, never to lose sight of what’s important. It’s nothing less than a privilege to have worked with you all. I thank you all once again and I wish you the best for the next year. Forza!
