I’m looking to be put out of a job. If I do my job right, 1️⃣ This department will continue grow. 2️⃣ I will most definitely be out of a job. And look, there has been a couple wins so far: 👉🏻 I’ve succeeded at increasing our department’s operational efficiency by 300% since stepping into leadership. 👉🏻 I’ve onboarded team members and trained the team up to a level where they are able to execute for clients exceptionally. And while we still have a fair bit to figure out as we go, we’re very much on track to get where we need to be as a whole. Quite frankly, at this point, it doesn’t even really have to do with me. I laid the foundations, made room for my team to follow their best judgement, and just provided support and guidance where required for this team.😌 We’re now at a point where we’re looking for yet another potential star in community management in the form of a comms intern. We have a couple of interviews lined up throughout the next two weeks to meet some new faces, all enthusiastic about the prospect of working with communities.💗 In the words of Steven Bartlett, your destination will be defined by the sum total of ingenuity, ideas and execution of the group of people that you assemble. With that in mind, let’s just say that I’m excited to be finding yet another marketing superstar in the making.⚡️

I had an “a ha” moment the other day while reflecting on my career. Let me know if you can relate, especially if you work the marketing & communications realm… In my late 20s, through networking and enough translatable skills, I was fortunate to land my first marketing job as a social media manager — the first time the company had hired such a position. I was thrilled and excited to get started. I thought I had a good sense of what to do and communicated my paradigm during the interview process. I imagined that with some direction from these people who hired me, I would surely do great things! But then over the first few weeks and months, I slowly realized that I was NOT set up for success. There was little-to-no onboarding. I was thrown into the fire right away. There were several competing voices offering different ideas on the direction I should take things. It wasn’t clear to me how everything fit together. I had no skills with managing up or across the organization. I found a few wins here and there but the overall strategy and cohesiveness was NOT there. Quickly I became overwhelmed and frustrated, and started to doubt myself. I’ll pause there and just ask: can anyone relate to this type of early-career experience? If so, please share your version of this story. And how did things ever get better for you? (If they did, but maybe you took your career in another direction after an episode like this — I’d be interested to hear that too). Eventually, I found my stride in the profession at a different organization thanks to some good luck with bosses, my own efforts to wade through TONS of content in search of answers, and support from of others who were willing to workshop ideas with me. But my personal observation (or hunch) is that early career MarCom people — especially in organizations with fewer than 500 total employees — face a pretty steep learning curve. What say you?
