This week’s history nugget honors Mrs. Robyn Modly, the Ship Sponsor of the fourth and future USS Cleveland (LCS 31).
Since being named Ship Sponsor, Mrs. Modly has attended the keel laying in Marinette, the Lone Sailor dedication at Great Lakes Science Center, and visited the ship’s crew in Mayport. And just like the previous Cleveland sponsors, she broke a bottle of sparkling wine to symbolically christen the Cleveland before its launch into the Menominee River at the Fincantieri Marinette Marine Shipyard on Saturday, April 15, 2023.
As the wife of the 33rd Under Secretary of the Navy, she met with Navy and Marine Corps families around the world, bringing an attentive eye and ear to identify the unique needs of military families and advocate for solutions.
Her professional experience was primarily in the mental health field, with broad experience and expertise in counseling people with issues related to attention deficit disorder (ADD/ADHD). She also served on the Board of the Anne Arundel County, Maryland, chapter of CHADD (Children and Adults with ADD) and was a certified instructor with CHADD International.
Mrs. Modly graduated from the University of Richmond with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, combining courses from the Robins School of Business and the Department of Journalism. She earned a Master of Arts in Counseling and Human Services from the University of Colorado and a Master’s in Education from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. She also received the Department of the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award.
Mrs. Modly and her husband have four children, three grandchildren, and a golden retriever.
