This phase of my life is about solving gnarly problems in ways that are effective, sustainable and deeply values aligned. One where I’m in rooms with people who believe in the dignity of all workers. Today, I’m kicking off the 5th Lab with a phenomenal collaborator - Pierce Edward Cornelius Otlhogile-Gordon, Ph.D. After years of playing safe and designing learning experiences that keep people comfortable, I’m finally pushing the boundaries - the process of designing and (re)learning has made me realize how much imagination is stolen away from us by corporate structures. The truth is that equity work doesn’t scale. It takes time, rigor, nuance. It takes a great deal of imagination to uncover what’s possible. It takes vulnerability to name what we don’t know. It takes community to co-create with. I’m excited to dive into the deep end with 50 humans who are swirling on how to solve deep, meaty issues in their own organizations. The news right now can make you feel overwhelmed and powerless. The beauty of civic engagement is that empowers you to make the lives of your neighbors better. If you are looking for a way to put your coding skills (beginner through expert) to some good, please check out Code for Dayton. For the next couple of months, they will be working with the Dayton Energy Collaborative (DEC). The DEC (based on my understanding) provide a front door for several programs that provide households with funds for weatherization and improving energy efficiency. DEC provides a paper-based universal application for the various programs, as well as a screener questionaire. Our goal for January will be to work with DEC to build a web-based version of the screener. Based on the outcome of that project, we might pursue the universal application process.
