🌅 A moment that felt like a full circle! ☀️ Two weeks ago, I had the privilege to be a panelist for the Asia-Oceania region information webinar at Georgia Tech, tailored for Fall 2024 incoming and interested students. The sun had not yet risen, but never had I ever felt better, waking up at 6:30 for a webinar. It was the most invigorating start to my day.  Why?  Because a year ago, I was right where many of those attendees were - eagerly joining these sessions, soaking in every word, posting multiple questions, fueled by hope and yearning for more information about my dream university. Being a middle-class student who dreamt of studying abroad but had no counsellor to guide me, such events were my best bet when it came to getting to know the campus and its community from an insider's perspective. Hosting this session was truly a breeze of nostalgia. I remembered the eager me, scribbling notes, hoping for a glimpse into my future at Georgia Tech. That day, I stood on the other side, sharing my journey, the highs, the lows, and the invaluable lessons learned along the way. Every question I answered made me more grateful than ever about sitting on the other side of the webinar at the campus. Being on that panel wasn't just about sharing the ease at Georgia Tech, but also the vulnerability and challenges one might, and mostly, will face. While questions regarding food or housing may seem insignificant in the broader scheme of a college application, these aspects influence our college experience in significant ways, and addressing them with just as enthusiasm and clarity as academics-based questions was my priority. I want to thank my club @International Ambassadors at Georgia Tech for this opportunity. Grateful for these moments of reflection, growth, and connection. This opportunity also reaffirmed my love of public speaking, and I would welcome any such opportunity in future with much enthusiasm. As a returning speaker, I am excited to engage with fellow professionals, thought leaders, and advocates in exploring the critical intersections of lobbying, advocacy, and public affairs. The Good Lobby’s Vision: The Good Lobby Summer Academy provides a unique platform for discussing new forms of influence, mobilization, and lobbying. In our geopolitically complex world, understanding participatory politics is essential. This year’s focus on transformative politics underscores the pivotal role of associations, NGOs, and businesses in shaping democratic discourse and policy outcomes. My Session: Advocacy Beyond Boundaries During my session, we will delve into the often overlooked dynamics of associations as key communicators of interests. Associations play a vital role in bridging gaps between stakeholders, advocating for shared causes, and ensuring diverse perspectives are heard. Our discussions will empower participants to navigate the delicate balance between advocacy and transparency, fostering effective collaboration. Learning from Interactivity: Having participated in previous Summer Academies, I highly value the open and transparent exchange of ideas. Insights gained from fellow participants have informed my advocacy strategies, emphasizing the importance of engaging with diverse stakeholders. Associations, NGOs, and the public all play essential roles in shaping policies that impact our societies. Looking Ahead: Post-Election Influence This Summer Academy precedes a significant opportunity for influence—the MEP hearings for the new European Commission. With new MEPs taking office and policy directions being drafted, our discussions will be timely and impactful. But what is virtual exchange and how are we bringing these opportunities to young people worldwide? Follow along with us on social this week as we break down the what, how, and why of virtual exchange! We define virtual exchange as programs that bring young people together from diverse places to learn and collaborate via technology. Facilitated by prepared adults, virtual exchange immerses young people in digital spaces, helping them grow practical skills, confidence, and a global network of peers. In fact, no two virtual exchange programs look alike because each is designed to meet the unique needs of young people. It could be a class where students communicate with native speaking peers in an immersive setting or a summer program where future marine biologists are designing projects to address ocean health alongside peers in coastal regions around the world.
