Patients know. By diving beneath the surface to explore how patients acquire knowledge and the types of knowledge they have, Vincent Dumez and Audrey L'Espérance's new article offers opportunities for deeper reflection and action. I particularly appreciated their perspective that "recognition of patient knowledge and its nature allows both individuals and institutions to account for the important influence of this knowledge on health, on care and service relationships, and on the creation of value in the health and social services system." Finally, here is our article which proposes a classification of #patientknowledge just published in Social Theory and Health, what we commonly called since we presented it at a conference: “the head of knowledge”. It is a proposal to go beyond what we describe ad nauseam as “#experientialknowledge”. Just to say : yes agreed “experiential” but not only that, much more in fact… You’re right - patients know, and I would add, deserve to have their concerns taken seriously. Many biases can serve to undermine the validity of a patient’s concerns so it is important to keep Dr. Croskerry’s wise words in mind - that the best diagnosticians are the best listeners.
