As the mental health crisis continues to rise among teens, schools are beginning to take different approaches to help students. Officials at Alta-Aurelia High School, a public high school in Alta, Iowa, created teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA), a program that not only guides teens to cope with their mental health but also teaches students to help each other. Could this be a way to talk about mental health and take away some of the stigma we constantly hear? 🎗️Today is World Suicide Prevention Day🎗️ This year's theme is 'Creating Hope Through Action,' and one of the most impactful actions you can take is educating yourself on how to support someone in crisis. 🤝 I've personally undergone and highly recommend two training programs: 1. ASIST – (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) is a two-day skills building workshop in suicide first aid. 2.Mental Health First Aid Ireland (MHFA) is a two-day training programme that empower and equip individuals with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to support a friend, family member or co-worker experiencing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis such as being suicidal or having a panic attack. For additional information and valuable tips on supporting individuals dealing with suicidal thoughts, please visit the Samaritans website. To minimize mental health crises on campus, it's important for faculty, staff, and students to understand the signs and symptoms of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (and be willing to talk about them). Some signs and symptoms can include: 🚩 Changes in mood or behavior 🚩 Changes in sleep habits 🚩 Changes in diet 🚩 Expressing hopelessness 🚩 Giving away possessions 🚩 Isolating from family and friends 🚩 Talking about suicide 🚩 Withdrawing from activities or classes This #suicidepreventionawarenessmonth, we encourage you to check out the following resources: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (Talk Saves Lives), QPR Institute (campus-wide training), Mental Health First Aid Trainings, The Jed Foundation (JED) ("You Can Help" trainings, among others).

Most of us would know how to help if we saw someone having a heart attack—we’d start CPR, or at the very least, call 9-1-1. But too few of us would know how to respond if we saw someone having a panic attack or if we were concerned that a friend or co-worker might be showing signs of alcoholism. Mental Health First Aid takes the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health and substance use problems by improving understanding and providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental illness or substance use disorder. Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. Just received my Mental Health First Aid certification! The training involved for this certification teaches individuals how to recognize when someone may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge.
