Post Growth Enterprise and Economics | Advisory, Advocacy & Research | New Zealand & International

In this short article, I explain my latest research, a literature review of ~500 degrowth economics and business articles through the lens of corporate functional managers. I wanted to see whether/how degrowth is being communicated specifically for application in corporate environments. Unsurprisingly, the dialogue between degrowth researchers and corporate practitioners is nascent. However, with a careful approach to avoiding co-optation into profit-centrism, there is a huge opportunity to jointly establish a bottom-up research and application agenda. The paper will be published in a volume on radical business perspectives on sustainability transitions, edited by Nicolas Chevrollier and others at Nyenrode Business University. I warmly thank Nicolas for his guidance and Lotte Levelt for her feedback on early drafts. Thanks also to Timothée Parrique for recommending me to write the degrowth chapter for the volume.   Wilkins, J. (2025) [Manuscript submitted for publication]. Corporate Degrowth Intrapreneurship. Great! Looking forward to it! As being active for many years in the degrowth movement and now leading WFTO, Fair Trade Enterprises, I can only confirm the role of business to achieve or not the needed system change. Shareholders capitalism is one of the root causes for the social and environmental crises. Fortunately there are alternatives: steward owned businesses, social enterprises, cooperatives,.. and Fair Trade Enterprises. Www.wfto.com.

Thank you for sharing this research. As like “performance”, if less in one way it will increase performance in another way. I am convinced that less growth, like described in this article will help us to grow, evolve in another way : individually, system-wise but also concerning our economic models which today oversimplistically defined. Thanks again Jennifer 👍🏻

Degrowth, or any other post-growth economy, has to drop capitalism all together. Corporates are the iconic agents of capitalism!

Thank you for sharing this much-needed article Jennifer!

Thanks for sharing Jennifer. We indeed need much more of this research, as well as companies and degrowthers talking. Please add me to the list of those interested when the paper is published.
