Growing demand for new film and TV production facilities in the UK provides an opportunity for the architectural practices engaged to design them. RIBA Journal explores what architects need to consider when designing these spaces. British Film Commission's Samantha Perahia MBE talks about the current trend for building production hubs, which include workspaces and facilities for virtual production and training, as well as studio space. Graham Mackfall discusses UMC Architects' work on the new 25-acre Sky Studios Elstree campus, which houses 12 sound stages as well as facilities such as workshops for set-building and costume-making. And PRP's Alistair Weir discusses the challenges involved in repurposing industrial units into studio spaces, as he did a decade ago with a former Sharp's distribution warehouse in Manchester. It's now The Sharp Project, home to more than 60 creative digital businesses as well as production stages and green screen studios. Its success led to the construction of a further purpose-built production facility, Space Studios Manchester, in 2014, which is now set to be expanded further.

A few years ago, I came across a sentence in a podcast "A city is not about its spectacles, but the enacted process it encompasses”. Somehow, that made a lot of sense to me in terms of how cities are perceived. How much significance do these spectacles lend to a city? And how does the enacted process cater to its essence? And how can we distinguish between these two aspects? When we were asked to choose an independent study topic, I eventually settled on 'Spatial Appropriation.' The goal was to select a topic and document/analyze it across five cities: New York, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, and London. During this process, I attempted to identify instances where people had appropriated a particular place for their needs, diverging from the place's original intended purpose. This could include performances on the street, musicians on a bridge, and so on. Here's a small collection of such places that I found fitting under the category of 'enacted process'. Personally, experiencing these places and documenting them brought me a lot of joy. Continuing with the college campus theme, we revisit our work at Stanford University with Ennead Architects; in which #fiberglass and #concrete #acoustical panels were a hallmark of the performance space. #finiteelementanalysis models were used to study the behavior of the composite assembly while the #design and #analysis of the structure accommodated forces and moments associated with #seismic activity. Individual modeling of panels using digitally fabricated forms ensured the unique surface qualities necessary for optimal #acoustic properties. #acousticdesign #seismicdesign #digitalfabrication #structuralengineering
