For the last few years (really since COVID began) those of us in the mental health field have felt the pressures of need from the public. We have also been hearing language such as: "There is a shortage of professionals..." "I have called (x number) therapists to start therapy and no one will call me back." "There aren't enough therapists for the amount of need the public has." I have typically found these to be perplexing statements because I now some many who were, are or want to be in a program focused on mental health with intention to serve others. I recently watched this video posted by Private Practice Skills. There are lots of things shared that resonate. Biggest takeaways: 43% of individuals who go through all the education and training don't move towards licensure (counselor and social work) because of the cost associated to do so. Most associates feel pressured to work A LOT in order to make money to support yourself. Most Associates and trainees cannot make enough in that role that they take on other jobs that are not related to the field just to make ends meet. Burnout rates are incredibly high and support for clinicians while building their careers is missing. Systemic change is needed. The mean educational debt for MA social workers is approximately $66k when the average income is $47k/year. For clinicians of color this disparity is even more stark and shocking. The mean total debt for Black clinicians is $92k and $79k for Hispanic clinicians. https://lnkd.in/gcWUAgjJ

I just read that TED talks are the new standard in learning: short, applied, easy-to-remember theses. In this talk, Dr. Amrita S. tells a very personal story and highlights the issue of invisible disabilities. A few things I liked about this were A) the discussion of medical doctors asking for help, B) the close-cropped camera angle which gave it a decidedly intimate feel that is sometimes lacking in the TED mainstage events, and C) the call to arms for empathy.
