Whilst much has been written about the challenging FTA ad environment recently, a glance across at the US suggests we are still in the very early days of seismic changes in the broader TV landscape. Net subscriber growth amongst streamers is fast approaching zero, increasing pressure on those platforms to be profitable, at a time when subscriber churn has nearly tripled. Retention will become more important (read: expensive), which in turn will impact production houses. Overlay the continually growing FAST services (Free Ad-supported Streaming TV) that come pre-loaded into new Connected TVs, the not insignificant omnipresent YouTube, and a gaming industry that even today still surprises many with its size and growth, and it is plain to see that within quite a short space of time who-is-watching/doing-what-where will be significantly different to today. As my dear gran often said to me 'You've gotta follow the audience son. 📢 Google debuts streaming ad network Ads on free #streaming channels are now even more challenging to avoid. Google's new TV advertising network can place targeted, unskippable ads on Google TV-powered streaming boxes and smart TVs and on free content. That means 20 million users with #Google TV-loaded devices from brands such as Sony and TCL and #Android hardware and #Chromecast users will receive more advertisements. According to The Verge, the reach could exceed 150 million if advertisers include YouTube.
