What I learned from hiring for our project, Innovatology We recently needed a virtual assistant for our project, but ended up hiring three people: a Multimedia Editor, Social Media Manager, and Brand Manager. It was my first time being on the hiring side, and I wanted to make it less stressful for everyone. Here are my lessons learnt: - Ask for a Task After the Interview: You'd be surprised how many people seem excited during the interview but then don't finish a simple task afterwards. This helped us see who was really ready to work. - Be Clear About What Skills You Want: I made sure to ask about specific skills before even setting up the interview. If I didn't find the specific skills in CV, I simply just sent one additional e-mail asking about these exact skills. This saved time for both me and the candidates. - Talk About Money Up Front: At first, I didn't mention how much the job is paid, and it turned into a guessing negotiation game. During the second round, we decided being open about the pay in the job description. We got applications from people who were a better fit because they knew the deal from the start. I think the transparency culture is very well known in some states in the US to bridge the gender gap, which I very much support! Why we are not more transparent about payslips in the EU? - Give Feedback: I always wanted to know why I didn't get a job, so I gave feedback to everyone who completed our task. It feels good to help others grow. I think in the EU, only Sweden has this feedback culture after the hiring procedure, which is inspiring for its empowerment. - Don’t Skip the Contract: Even if you're small business hiring freelancers, a good contract makes everything clear from the beginning. Thanks, Matthew Mottola for a great article with so many good stats. Let's make 2024 the year of adoption for Open Talent. It's going to take all of us working together to get it done. As I was reminded in a conversation with a good friend that's an executive in a global consulting firm it's still early days. While the firm spends over $1 billion on contingent labor only 4% of that comes from open talent platforms. My sense is that the future isn't about analog talent providers versus open talent platforms it's about the digital transformation of talent writ large. Every talent provider, from outsourcers to staffing firms, will become a platform that taps into ecosystems of both internal and external talent. If they are not willing to cross this digital divide, they will become irrelevant. This happens in every industry. Just think if Vogue would have thought of themselves as a curator of fashion instead of a fashion magazine. They would have owned fashion in the digital world. These kinds of mindset shifts are difficult to overcome. They are generational. Here's to more momentum in 2024. Let's take the friction out of matching the best talent to the right tasks to be done. As I enter a new era of being a fully remote, freelance contractor (part of the CBB Bilingual Qualitative Research team), I am constantly asked what I do. I am an independent Market Research Moderator and Analyst, working in English and Spanish. In other words, I am passionate about speaking to people to understand how they think and feel. In the market research world, this is called Qualitative research, rather than Quantitative which focuses on numbers, statistics and data. For as long as I can remember, I've been told that I ask A LOT of questions. You know... the sometimes annoying but always compelling, "but why?" or "How so?" I finally found the perfect career where there is no such thing as too many questions. My innate curiosity and joy of getting to know people, paired with my professional moderator trainings, has allowed me to become an expert in asking the RIGHT questions.
