"Experience is the hardest kind of teacher; it gives you the test first and the lesson afterward." This insightful adage encapsulates the profound nature of learning through life's trials and challenges. Unlike traditional forms of education where lessons precede tests, experience flips this sequence, often placing us in situations where we must confront difficulties and obstacles before fully understanding their implications. When we face a test in life, whether it's a personal crisis, a professional setback, or a moment of profound decision-making, we are often thrust into the midst of uncertainty. It's in these moments that we are tested not only in terms of our knowledge and skills but also in our resilience, adaptability, and emotional strength. The outcome of these tests, whether we succeed or falter, becomes a powerful source of learning. The "lesson afterward" refers to the reflection and understanding that comes only after we've navigated through the challenge. It's through introspection and analysis of our experiences that we glean insights, understand our strengths and weaknesses, and uncover valuable lessons that shape our future actions and decisions. This cycle of experiencing tests, facing challenges, and deriving lessons forms a continuous loop of personal growth and development. Each test becomes an opportunity to acquire wisdom and deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Moreover, this adage underscores the importance of resilience and a growth mindset. Instead of being discouraged by failures or setbacks, we should view them as integral parts of our learning journey. Each experience, whether positive or negative, contributes to our growth and prepares us better for future tests. In essence, while experience may be a tough and sometimes unforgiving teacher, it is also one of the most effective. Had a very cool chat with Lars Hemming Jorgensen & STAN Studios at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity this year. I shared a bit about what we're doing at Karta: making brands & fandom playable. As well as my thoughts on emerging technologies. Two things I would have done differently looking back at the interview: 1. On the question of rising feelings of depression & screen addiction: I would have said this is actually more a case of what happens offline; parenting, environment, family situation - feelings & emotions outside of the virtual realm that impact young people growing up which they bring into these worlds whilst trying to "escape". Sometimes it helps to sooth & remove these feelings, & sometimes it amplifies them. It's vital young people learn how to communicate their feelings/potential addictions online & offline, in safe, supportive spaces for them to do so. 2. I would have cut off all my wrist bands as it looks like I've been to waaay too many music festivals! James Lancaster - thank you for writing and sharing this story. I think it raises excellent points around our purpose in the events industry as a whole. I felt that when we first started adding "legacy" to events, it was this (mostly) random add on to the overall event purpose. It was never rooted in the host organization's DNA. One of the things I like to focus on for all conversations around legacy or CSR or environmental sustainability is - what's rooted in your DNA? What is your organization already committed to? What type of impact do you want to have based on your core values or business principles? I think when we start our conversation here, we end up in a place where our events echo those commitments and a greater impact is seen by all - including, often times, the destination where an event takes place. #events #CSR #eventprofs

I wrote a post recently about being brave enough to stop self-victimising yourself and your situation and be brave enough to change it. Such insightful comments from Prateek Sanjay and Bree Rockwell highlighted the thought that happiness (or sadness) is a self-built construct; it’s a state of mind or being that leads to the self-realisation that only you can change that construct (or environment). One of my most memorable mentors and friends, Don Cope helped me through a difficult time I was having as an introvert, trying so desperately to climb the greasy leadership pole at Johnson & Johnson. His sapient advice was, an organisation is nothing more than an entity that will continue to survive under the momentum of size and scale, absolutely irrespective of your individual input. The entity does not care whether you’re here or not - there’s always a willing and congenial “empty suit” to step right in to take your place. So, as an individual, you have 2 choices - you can choose to “change yourself” or you can choose to “change your environment”. At that time, I chose to change myself - that involved the necessity to carefully and humbly rebuild relationships to show that I can be what they want me to be for the sole purpose of reaching the Top 200 executives in a 140,000 strong company - I didn’t want to be beaten so, needed to show capability and congeniality that would have made Sandra Bullock proud! However, a personality and style transplant can only hold an independent thinker for so long - within my next company, after the first 3 years of toeing the line, I chose to challenge my environment to drive my leaders to think beyond their current narrow field of self-preservation. The eventual realisation that they were never going to change from good to great, led to to difficult decision to change my environment to one where lateral thinking was acknowledged and, for the most part, encouraged. Back to Pratek & Bree’s insight - imagine being on Hollywood’s “A” list as the most magnificent “Superman” that ever took on the role, Mr. Christopher Reeve - had he decided against horse riding on that fateful day, he would never have had to survive for the remainder of his existence, trapped within his own body, through Tetraplegia. How would any of us honestly cope with a severed spinal cord at the C1 vertebrae if it were to happen, without notice, this afternoon? How would every goal and everything we thought so important to us just 5 seconds before, be less than insignificant now? Why are we so adamant that our problems are insurmountable - the ignorant boss, the report that we didn’t finish, the meeting where we know we have to completely “wing it”, the customer meeting we don’t want to do since it’s raining… aren’t our bubbles so pathetic? So what did Christopher Reeve do? The man in the cape was simply an actor playing a role - the man in the chair IS the real Superman.
