Attempts to implant pig kidneys in humans, up to now, have not been successful. News, yesterday, Massachusetts General Hospital had successfully performed the first implant of this type hopefully will change this story. New from Natalia Trayanova, Yingnan Zhang and team in eLife Sciences Publications, Ltd.: A genotype-specific digital-twin strategy, "Geno-DT," that creates a virtual replica of a patient’s heart—for the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). ARVC is an inherited disease of the heart that affects about one in 1,000 people—mostly young adults. ARVC can lead to ventricular tachycardia (VT), a disordered heart rhythm that can be life threatening and is associated with approximately 10% of sudden death cases in people under 65 years old. The standard treatment for VTs caused by ARVC is catheter ablation, which delivers energy to disrupt the abnormal heart rhythms. However, difficulties in determining the locations of VTs in the heart mean that ablation in ARVC is not always effective, and VTs often recur. The "digital twin" approach could make finding VTs easier and the treatment more effective. The study is a collaboration of the Trayanova lab and clinical geneticists and electrophysiologists from the ARVC research group at Johns Hopkins Hospital, led by cardiologist Hugh Calkins.  #digitaltwin #biomedicalengineering #ARVC #ventriculartachycardia #electrophysiology

Our #MetaG1 Research Consortium is pleased to share a groundbreaking development achieved by Iveric Bio, An Astellas Company in the fight against Geographic Atrophy (GA). GA is an advanced form of dry age-related macular degeneration (commonly referred to as AMD). AMD is a disease that affects part of the back of the eye called the macula. The macula is the central part of the retina, which is the “film” lining the inside of the eye. 🌟 Iveric Bio, an Astellas Company, has received FDA approval for IZERVAY™, a novel complement C5 inhibitor. It's the "first approved" GA treatment showing a significant reduction in GA progression rates over 12 months in two Phase 3 clinical trials. Additionally, IZERVAY demonstrated early benefits as early as six months, slowing the loss of photoreceptors and disease progression. GA affects an estimated 1.5 million in the U.S., often leading to irreversible vision loss. Yet, astonishingly, 75% of cases remain undiagnosed. Without timely intervention, an estimated 66% may face severe visual impairment. 👨⚕️ Dr. Pravin Dugel, President of Iveric Bio, emphasizes the importance of this milestone in transforming therapies for retinal diseases. 💥 Exciting breakthrough in liver health! A recent study by Dr. David Marti-Aguado and international experts, including members of our team, introduced a new MRI-based imaging biomarker, the MR-MASH, aiding in the identification of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) without the need for invasive histology. We combine fat fraction (PDFF) and waist circumference (yes, #AI helps to obtain all these data automatically from the images). This innovative approach, developed and validated with 317 patients with Steatotic Liver Disease (Spain, Portugal, USA, with different MR protocols), demonstrated remarkable accuracy (AUC = .88) in detecting MASH, showing strong correlation with liver biopsy. The MR-MASH score's sensitivity and specificity adds clinical utility in the identification and management of MASH, outperforming existing screening strategies.
