Leaders chronically underestimate the value of their presence. And they overestimate how much effort it takes to give it. Studies show that attention from one’s manager drives the same level of employee engagement as a cash bonus (here’s a research example from Cisco: https://lnkd.in/g7knqPUU). We want to feel seen by our leaders—even in small doses. The challenge is that it’s easy to believe we don’t have time to give our teams undivided attention. When work pulls us in a million directions, it’s tempting to rush through our interactions, multitasking, rather than give our teammates our focused presence. One of the reasons we built the Rising Team platform was to create simple, focused ways for managers to be fully present with their teams. It’s not about lengthy team workshops—it’s about efficient yet meaningful touchpoints for teams to connect and support each other. Want an easy way to get started with your team? Try a free, 15-minute activity to strengthen your connections: https://lnkd.in/geBZQpJB I’ve learned over the years that it’s not the minutes I’m present with my teammates that count. It’s the level of *presence* I bring to our time together. — Like this post? Follow me for more insights on leadership, team building, and the future of work. The red lights are flashing on America's business leadership dashboard, with a decline in trust among employees. According to Gallup, only 21% of U.S. employees strongly trust their organization's leadership, raising concerns about morale and engagement. Gallup's key findings reveal a Trifecta of Leadership: Clear Communication, Confidence in the Future, and Leading Change. When these elements align, 95% of employees fully trust their leaders. BOxD is here to help leaders build trust. Employee confidence is rooted in effective two-way conversations. When employees feel heard, they are over 7 times more likely to have confidence in leaders managing emerging challenges. Trust can be regained! Book a zero pressure meeting with me to find out how. https://lnkd.in/gefTnsmp

One of the simplest and most effective leadership actions is rarely employed. It boosts employee engagement and morale, while increasing your accessibility and insight into the organization. I also particularly enjoyed the time spent on Management By Wandering Around (MBWA). I got to know the people on my team better by randomly walking around to different areas. I had no specific agenda except to engage people, listen to them, and value their contributions. They in turn stated they appreciated me devoting time to get to know them. It was a Win-Win. It’s easy to get trapped in your executive office by meetings and deadlines and only talking to employees about work. That’s why I forced MBWA into my weekly routine by having it on two separate one hour time slots on the calendar, Tuesday and Friday afternoons. Even if one was cancelled, I still would have one opportunity to walk around and talk to members of the team. MBWA increases employee communications to and from management in an unscripted, informal, more candid, and genuine fashion. MBWA also breaks down the layers and barriers between people, making the boss more visible, while s/he is building rapport and trust. Contrast a random MBWA visit with a scheduled and scripted visit from the boss. Who looks forward to those? Those encounters are generally structured and come across more of a show. They yield a low ROI for the employees and the boss. Plus, employees may frown about investing time into prepping for the show. It’s up to the boss to find time on their packed calendar to get to know their employees, to be actively present with them, to listen and interact with his/her team, and get a pulse check on their esprit-de-corps. Being part of elite teams in the government taught me an Elite Mindset to Connect for Success. Leadership is most effective when leaders are connected with the workforce, which I stress during my interactive leadership development sessions. Here is Mike Howard’s Ronin Leadership Podcast where I discuss MBWA: https://lnkd.in/g37aWg_S Credit for the MBWA term goes to management experts Tom Peters and Robert H. Waterman from their book, “In Search of Excellence.” #leadershipinsights #thoughtleadership #thoughtleaders #employeeengagement #ELITEMINDSETS #connections #effectiveleadership #effectivecommunication #breakbarriers #winwin
