60% of customers will pay more for a product with sustainable packaging*. But it is hard as a startup to be sustainable all the time. I’ve seen first hand the challenging trade-offs in terms of getting the packaging and stock needed to keep customers happy, but also how long sustainable packaging can take. For example, refillable packaging that ends up leaking in the long-term or home compostable packaging that tears during shipping. Trying to get something that works well for customers but is also sustainable can be a challenge. The solution? Better communication on your journey to sustainability. Here’s how: 1. Tell a story Share your brand’s journey with sustainability - your motivations, milestones, challenges and triumphs. 2. Be transparent and honest Admit your shortcomings and goals for the future in your storytelling. Sustainability is an iterative goal, so be open to your potential customers about what you’re doing to consistently be better, as well as listening to their feedback. 3. Educate and inspire Provide resources and studies if possible to educate potential customers on your practices. This can be as simple as adding an extra email into your welcome flow, or you can go as far as having an entire page on your site committed to communicating your sustainability. It was a pleasure to take part in Dienas bizness conference on #sustainability. A few points to remember when thinking about the price VS value of a sustainable product: 🍃on a surface-level, for many sustainability starts and ends with packaging. While packaging is an obvious thing to look after, sustainability requires a holistic approach throughout the organization. 🍃sustainability in private business VS public enterprises is a big difference. I believe there is much to learn from each other. From the tiniest of details to the biggest of scale ups. 🍃there are failed sustainability attempts. Sometimes it ends up being irrelevant for the customer or is not as handy as planned. Company just have to live with the fact, improve it and launch again. It costs premium, though. 🍃customers value sustainable products, IF the brand can deliver what it promises. #tellthefacts At PLŪKT we do feel like we are constantly inventing new packaging solutions and cleaner labels, and better supply chains, and better way of delivering goods and so on and so forth. This is holistic approach. And we want to fully immerse in it.
