Empowering the Next Generation | Bridging Opportunity Gaps | Scaling Organizations | Finding Actionable Insights
Thanks Aurora Hoffman for pulling this data together and writing a great article for LaunchPoint! There's most definitely a disconnect between the college curriculum and specific skills needed in the workforce that would give recent graduates the confidence they need to #succeed. Ensuring the college experience also includes #professionallearning opportunities is the key to mitigating the mounting anxiety students feel as they transition beyond academia. #internships #professionaldevelopment #futureofwork

Award winning | Chartered | Top100 CMO | Business Growth Advisor | Mentor | Chair | NED | Speaker | Founder | MD. On a mission supporting ambitious entrepreneurs from launch to exit. Strategies transforming business. 🎯
I constantly hear business leaders say "where have all the people gone". We heard yesterday during the Autumn Statement about investment needed to support skills. I equally hear from students (who are being skilled up and are enthusiastic about getting into work) and from careers services about the difficulty faced by students entering the world of work in finding work experience, internships, placements, and their first job! There are so many benefits of making all these 4 things available and easier. We don't have to wait for big solutions to come to address the problem - sometimes all we (business leaders / businesses / brands) have to do is take a simple and quick action; such as make ourselves known and available by reaching out to those managing the processes (i.e. career services in relevant or local education institutions), be included in their directories and show up and support their homegrown local events such as this one. If you are a business looking for talent I urge you to lean in and participate in activity such as this at Royal Holloway, University of London. Special alert for businesses or marketing agencies looking to hire future marketing / communications talent, there’s high interest in marketing / communications careers from students at Royal Holloway’s School of Business & Management! P.S. If you are attending the Surrey Festival of Skills today, I wish you an excellent day! https://lnkd.in/e4SEEgJ3 #Education #Recruitment #Talent #Hiring #StudentPlacement #Surrey #SurreyJobs #Jobs #JobCreation #Employment #Careers #SurreyEducation #Business #BusinessGrowth #Productivity #Innovation #diversityequityinclusion #worldofwork #Employability #IoD #Directors #InstituteOfDirectors

I make DEI not feel like a 4 letter word - via Adaptive Leadership | Systems Thinking | and an eternal hope that anchors my soul.
“Our jobs require specialized education and training so it’s made recruiting minorities more difficult.” These are sentiments I’ve seen while reviewing several State agency, boards, or commissions DEI Action plans to which I’ve usually replied, I think you should expand your vision. Think bigger. If we are to solve some of the equity challenges across our communities we have exceeding the intentionality that went into creating the problems. Here in Oregon we are far from the demographics of this nation but if we look nationally, 53% of college graduates were white, that means that specialized education line of thought is just your convenient excuse. Have you considered expanding your applicant pool by partnering with any of the hundreds of minority serving institutions to advertise or maybe develop practicums, internships, or formalized partnerships with college advisors specific to your specialty?! *crickets* It’s beyond frustrating to see people not really even really trying to bridge gaps yet they’ll pat one another on the back and say good job, and talk about how difficult DEI work is. Witnessing the lack of urgency and lack of sincerity that goes into some people’s DEI efforts, as a poor Black kid from Northeast Portland, with a long list of friends and family who’ve lived their entire lives struggling to carve out opportunities for themselves in the rat race of failed promises in #liberal #inclusive #Portland… it’s enraging. Either quit pretending to care or get better. There’s nothing but opportunity to improve and that should come with a great sense of urgency… as if it’s your family involved in the generational cycles of suffering we see in PDX. The hypocrisy and performative wokeness in the #PNW is causing harm and I don’t really have an appetite for it. . . . . . #Oregon #DEI #Leadership #Government #Education #Degree #College #MSI #HBCU #careers #diversity #excuses #UofO #OSU #WOU #PSU #Woke

Young people: “What job or career opportunities are even available in McLean County?” Employers: “How can we ensure young people are better equipped with the ‘soft’ or essential skills before they come to the workplace?” Educators: “How can we gain access to the workplace so we can help prepare students still in high school for jobs and careers?” United Way of McLean County sees these challenges as an opportunity to develop a coordinated solution that answers the questions of all three groups.
