July 2 was the 116th birthday of Justice Thurgood Marshall. Known as "Mr. Civil Rights," he represented the NAACP in Brown v. Board of Education, a landmark decision against discrimination in education. Later he was the first African American Justice to serve on the Supreme Court.

A sobering peek into the the state of higher education, and a truly chilling view into the sort of training that future doctors, lawyers, politicians, entrepreneurs, and captains of industry are receiving at places like #Harvard. Shame on the #IvyLeague. and its many imitators. Does this not violate civil rights legislation? #Discrimination #highereducation #indoctrination #speakup https://lnkd.in/gwRMmeVC

“When a nation becomes obsessed with the guns of war, it loses its social perspective and programs of social uplift suffer.” To speak about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s dream, you must not neglect to recognize his nightmare. The nightmare being the insidious ways that racism transformed after integration. How the Vietnam War became a distraction to a nation where war propaganda headlines replaced the racist events happening on American soil. And although the Civil Rights Movement has brought about immense changes in attaining equality, we must acknowledge the repetition of certain themes that were prevalent during this era that persist today. As we are looking back at speeches of MLK and Malcom X while witnessing the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Palestine, I want to acknowledge that Black history is History. Period. When the world learns about History and the great minds who understood the nuances of oppression and the various forms it took, we could learn how to combat all forms of hate to truly work towards MLK’s dream of non-violence.

Today we honor Juneteenth and celebrate the emancipation and freedom of Black people once enslaved. White supremacy was interwoven with the founding and history of the U.S., our capital, and DC. The nation’s capital was established on land annexed from Potomac slave plantations. Enslaved African Americans constructed the White House and the Capitol. For their forced labor, enslaved African Americans received no wages, while the government paid their enslavers. Washington, DC was also a bustling thoroughfare for the slave trade, with traffickers selling enslaved African Americans throughout the South. https://lnkd.in/dyHwN9h8 Today—160 years after the Civil War—there are resurgent forces glorifying our history of slavery. Just one month ago, in May 2024 Shenandoah County School Board voted to rename two Virginia public schools after Confederate Generals who fought to keep African Americans in bondage. In June 2024 the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights went to court on behalf of the VA NAACP and five Shenandoah high school students—to challenge the School Board’s action to take Shenandoah backward in time. We are proud to stand with those courageous VA students fighting for their right to education free of racial discrimination. Please stand with us. https://lnkd.in/dfDtK2wv #Juneteenth #racialjustice #StandWithUs #Reparations
