"Nothing matters more than memory. Without memory we learn nothing. Without memory there’s no coherence. There’s no progress. … Because I think justice and memory are inseparable. Without remembering what has happened, what went wrong, what went right, the blessings that justice brings – dignity, real prosperity, individual and social health, peace – these blessings will not and cannot arrive. History lights the path toward injustice so without history there’s no hope." From Steven Spielberg's keynote address at Gettysburg National Cemetery the 149th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, just 10 days after his 2012 film "Lincoln" was released. In the fifth letter in our open correspondence project, we commend Mr. Spielberg for committing this film to our national imagination and discourse. As political polarization continues to increase, the spirit of political reprisal and revenge intensifies, and casual allusions to another civil war or revolutionary war become ever more common, Abraham Lincoln's example of temperence - of the victor that would stay the hand of vengeance - becomes ever more necessary. In this letter, we also consider Lincoln's role in America's broader democratic-republican experiment in self-government. The Civil War was but a few chapters ago; the prologue begins in Polybius Book VI. Check out this letter and our open correspondence project. For January, letter recipients are Steven Spielberg and General (Ret.) Michael Hayden, former director of the NSA and CIA. https://lnkd.in/e7237CVT
