🪷 Reflecting on 10 years of Primary Care and Rural Health 🪷 3/8 Working as a rural family doctor, I embraced this opportunity to learn as much as I could about providing rural primary care to the community I served. Unfortunately by early 2016 I had realized that I was not coping and was experiencing burnout (a story for another time). At this time I also became more interested in how health policy shaped rural health. In 2016 in collaboration with colleagues from EYFDM and EURIPA, I led workshop in Copenhagen titled: Young Doctor Movement Engaging in Rural Health Policy. The summary of the workshop can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eWXDu_UG Following this conference I also joined the EURIPA executive as a young doctor representative. In August of 2016 I had moved to the UK and restarted training, this time in general practice. This opportunity has offered me insight into the experiences of IMGs and challenges that are present when moving counties as a healthcare professional, something that is happening more often in recent years. 🗝️ Key learning: 1. You can learn a lot from your rural community. 2. Burnout can happen to anyone. It is not a personal failing but a reflection of a dysfunctional system. 3. 🗎 The EU4Health Civil Society Alliance calls for sustainable funding mechanisms for (health) civil society organisations (CSOs)! This joint statement, signed by over 30 #healthNGOs, comes after a campaign from the #EU4HealthCSA to guarantee the continuation of operating grants for #health CSOs, and an event organised in the European Parliament in June, supported by MEP Istvan Ujhelyi. The joint statement calls for: ⭕ The European Commission to reinstate a multiannual framework for Operating Grants for health CSOs. ⭕ Clearer and more coherent action from the EU Commission to support #civilsociety in accessing sustainable #funding, and to protect civil society from existing threats. ⭕ The organisation of a dialogue between different DGs, the European Parliament and civil society to discuss and review the funding programmes. #THOUGHTS Reflecting on Last Week's Session on Community Engagement with Dr. Charles Chineme Nwobu MD, MPH, MSc, FRSPH , Medical and Program Director at Child Family Health International Ghana Global Partners on our ongoing Global Health Elective Program The session offered valuable insights into innovative initiatives and interventions for marginalized populations, highlighting the importance of understanding the complexities of healthcare in low-income countries and households. Dr. Nwobu's expertise shed light on the challenges faced by these communities and emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to address their healthcare needs. The session featured two thought-provoking videos that underscored the significance of empathy and understanding in healthcare provision. Dr. Nwobu stressed the importance of recognizing the role of various stakeholders, including patients, healthcare providers, and regulatory bodies, in ensuring quality healthcare. He also emphasized the impact of perceptions on healthcare seeking and quality, noting that cultural background, socioeconomic status, and educational background can influence an individual's understanding of healthcare quality. The discussion resonated with me, as it highlighted the importance of considering the context and content of patients' and caregivers' opinions and complaints. It is crucial to acknowledge their integral role in determining healthcare quality and to avoid dismissing their perceptions as "useless" without proper understanding. The session reinforced my passion for global healthcare and community engagement. I believe that intersectoral collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches are essential for improving health-seeking behaviour and patient care. Today we are in Barcelona kicking off the #Palliakid project focused on paediatric #palliativecare and funded under the #horizoneurope programme. PALLIAKID is an interdisciplinary project aiming to evaluate the feasibility, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of novel interventions for children, adolescents and young people (AYA) with palliative and end-of-life care needs in different healthcare systems across Europe, with a focus on those factors that influences the active patients’ and family caregivers’ engagement. https://lnkd.in/dAPNQQZr

Kudos to Dr. Doyin Ogunyemi, University of Lagos, and other team members, the elderly's individual requirements, values, and preferences should be the center of age-friendly primary health care. Health systems that are age-friendly prioritize the provision of optimal care to elderly individuals and mitigate certain risks that they encounter more frequently than others. The results of my earlier research indicated they also experience catastrophic healthcare expenditure. Age-friendly primary health care needs to be implemented in other Nigerian states. How do health systems ensure high-quality, affordable, and equitable care is delivered throughout their country? Today we were honored to be joined by guest lecturer Dr. Klaus B Von Pressentin, Chair of the Division of Family Medicine in the Department of Family, Community and Emergency Care (FaCE) in the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Cape Town to help us sort this out! He shared several key lessons from the South African 🇿🇦 context, where primary health care and the relatively young specialty of Family Medicine are a clear national priority. "Rooted in relationships," Family Medicine physicians focus on: ➡ Delivering holistic clinical care attuned to the bio-psycho-social-spiritual aspects of health; and ➡ Leading quality and safety efforts, bridging the gaps between individual and community - and between clinical and public health - in order to address the "quadruple disease burden." They are keenly aware of their need to be "socially accountable" for providing care that engenders trust, while playing additional roles, such as community advocate and change agent. Klaus and his colleagues are part of ensuring the next generation of Family doctors are prepared to lead the delivery of high-quality care throughout South Africa, en route to reaching the SDGs. Age-friendly PHCs are designed to cater specifically to the unique healthcare needs of older adults. They prioritize accessibility, affordability, and comprehensive services tailored to address age-related health concerns. Yesterday, we had a stakeholder brainstorming meeting with the Permanent Secretary of Health District VI, Lagos State, Dr. Cecilia Mabogunje, District directors, PHC health providers, NGO, and older adults to Select and Co-design priority interventions to promote age-friendly services in one of its PHCs as a pilot project. This follow-up catalyzer grant is funded by the Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health  Northwestern University - The Feinberg School of Medicine. 𝐈𝐧 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, Emerging Public Health Advocate Elijah S. Tingban has appealed to Dr. Kpoto, the newly appointed Health Minister of Liberia, to restore the semi-autonomous status of the Central Medicine Store (CMS). Highlighting the sector's challenges in a publication on Frontpage Africa, Tingban hopes that the Health Minister will tackle these longstanding issues head-on. One of the key recommendations put forth by Tingban is the transition from outdated paper-based medical records to digitized Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) at facilities like JFK. By embracing this technological advancement, care coordination and data collection can be significantly improved, leading to better patient outcomes and informed policy decisions. The urgency of the situation extends beyond physical health. Tingban highlights the critical need for mental health support in Liberia. Substance use disorders, stigma, limited budgetary support, and inadequate facilities have contributed to setbacks in the mental health sector. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄.𝐒. Absolutely delighted to be collaborating with Samantha Thomas and colleagues on the Health Promotion Special Issue on the Commercial Determinants of Health. Please see below for the call for contributions. This will no doubt be an important contribution to the developing field and the Special Issue is particularly looking for contributions on where there is an urgent need to address knowledge gaps including: 👉 Strengthening the equity lens in CDoH research, ensuring that approaches focused on specific industries or products are complemented by integrated approaches across sectors; 👉 Fuller understanding of the impacts of CDoH in broader ranges of countries including Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs), and in Indigenous communities; 👉Intersectional approaches to CDoH, including those considering race, gender, and human rights; 👉 Economic, political and legal analyses of the CDoH across different contexts; 👉 The role of public policy, civil society, academia or business itself in action on the CDoH; 👉 Moving from theoretical frameworks to action at global, national and local levels; 👉 The evolving range of harmful industry activities.
