Of all the people living in crippling fear of AI, you should be the last one. This post is for UX designers. 👇🏻 Here’s a truth pill: AI could take over the production and design part of the job. We can already sense the shift with new AI tools (Adobe Firefly, GPT-4, Midjourney, etc.) entering the market. But the catch is, it’s only going to get better for UX designers. Yep, you read that right. Why? Because now: 1/ UX will go beyond aesthetics — giving designers a chance to play with deep thought, emotions, user behavior, impact, and perspective-taking. 2/ Users will prefer personalized experiences more than ever because AI cannot match the deep empathy humans have for their users. 3/ The demand for insightful designers who can study user behavior, decode human context and motivations, and then, craft experiences to make users stay will increase. 4/ AI could nail execution, but it will need human supervision to ensure things are in alignment — which means more need for deep thinking. 5/ You will get a seat at the table for strategic thinking and decision-making. No more producing design assets alone from the sidelines. All of these reasons translate into one thing: It is time for designers to shine. Roles are changing. UX designing will be less about designing, and more about strategizing, integration of AI into the mundane parts of the job. Less day-to-day tasks, and more big-picture decisions. So, how do you gear up for it? ✅ Broaden your skill set, including AI integration, business acumen, storytelling, data analysis, and ethics, to stay valuable to design teams. ✅ Proactively seek opportunities to influence product and business strategies. ✅ Learn how to work alongside AI to turn your good work into great work. I’ve seen a lot of people calling for more UX in AI, but I haven't seen specifics on what that really means and how to do it, especially within cross-functional team settings. I’ve taken a step back and created a foundational user-centered design process that can incorporate AI with the following goals: - Make user-centered, data-driven decisions - Streamline cross-functional collaboration and communication - Scale to any size team or project - Involve research, content and/or conversation design, and product design from the beginning of the process - Incorporate ethical principles throughout the entire process The main phases of the process are: Align - Define - Research - Strategize - Design - Test with users - Build - QA test/Test with users - Refine and review - Launch - Monitor and test I’ve visualized this in Figma: https://lnkd.in/dFPSQtyk If you'd like a Word version, please message me. This process will vary based on the organization, team, product or service, terminology, and roles, but it's meant to be a starting point and you can add, modify, or remove things as needed. Please feel free to use and adjust to your specific needs! The main variations come in the strategy phase, where the technology, channels, devices, integrations, and content types and functionality will differ depending on what the experience is. This is where you decide if AI is the right solution and if it is, align on where and which AI tools are most effective to implement. The most important things to remember are: - You don’t need a ton of people and a large budget to get valuable insights from user research and testing (more on this coming soon!) - AI is just another tool in our toolkit and the need for it should be validated through user research and testing - Alignment and documentation will set you up for successful cross-functional collaboration and communication I’m working on templates to operationalize this and a more detailed conversational AI process, so stay tuned! One AI UX tool you NEED to try! 😍 -- I tend to steer away from adding excess products to my tech stack [and especially weary when involving AI because I never had access to these when I studied. I'm a purist sorry] - I know I'm capable of doing most things manually and fairly quickly at this point. I've had a lingering task of reformatting typed out user journeys into proper UX journey map layouts. So Figma integrated AI feature, we all knew they will Sooner or later, because that is the future. Since we will be using the tool to now create designs, do we have to mention created with the help of AI? After every design? Definitely not, because that will be ABSURD right? But will it be helpful for designers? It will be, if we know how to use it and where to use it just like any other tool out there. What designer still have after the update? 1. We will still do our own research. 2. We will still need to design a product empathizing the user ( because AI can’t ) 3. We will still need to solve user’s painpoint and many more. Since designing is now easier than before, we might as well be prepared for products with more UX flaws, as we see obsession of thinking UI/UX is same. People, if you think anyone can design, and using figma makes you a UX designer, CONGRATULATIONS, now you too can design. But if you are among those who believe in UX is what makes a product better and UX is more than just knowing to use figma, then i have a good news for you too, CONGRATULATIONS, the design created with prompt might not solve the problem and mightnot be usable, because UX is IMPORTANT.
