Wayfinding best practice – Landmarking MAKE IT EASY TO RECOGNISE BY NAME One of the most useful methods of improving wayfinding is to create visually distinctive landmarks along a complicated journey. In an unfamiliar environment the mind will recognise elements that are different from their surrounding environment. A top tip of the day for you - Don't let droopy cord distract from your display! It’s easy to overlook, but subtle details like ensuring you have straight cord can make a huge difference to the visual quality of your display. Here’s why: ↳ Drooping cord creates a visual distraction from your artwork or exhibit because the curve of the cord clashes with the architecture of the space it sits within, drawing the eye to it and creating a messy feel. Whereas a straight, clean line of cord visually blends into its surroundings, as the line neatly matches nearby details like skirting boards and shadow gaps which are all horizontal, straight lines. Super simple, yet makes a huge difference! 🤩 You can remove the droop either by trimming your cord and re-inserting it into one of the barrier uprights (⚠️ never knot or wrap the cord), or, if your barriers have simply gotten too close together, just moving the barriers apart (we recommend up to a 2m gap for freestanding). It's always fun to work with sign fabricators to see how our designs actually look and come to life. We were unsure of the half inch acrylic and how it would look, but considering it was a large part of our wayfinding strategy, we didn't want to go thinner. We also wanted the green to really pop on the edge so we asked High Tech Signs of Cincy to create one with the green painted second surface vs a second with the green painted on the edge. Once we received, we instantly fell in love with the 1/2 inch size of the acrylic and felt it was a clear winner to have the edges painted green rather than rely on the second surface green reflecting through the edges. #signagedesign #prototypes #signageprototypes #wayfinding
