I love nerding out to OSINT walkthroughs and seeing how people tackle investigations. This one from Steven Harris had me at first wondering how the hell I'd go about solving the geolocation. Would the exif data get me there? I'll spend some time now looking into Overpass Turbo and how it can assist in map searches (guilty of spending hours on maps looking for the right location). For interest I ran the image through geospy.ai and it advised the location was in England which reinforces the point of not relying on tools to get to the answer. Over two years ago, Jimmy "Reverend" Jones, PhD and I began preparing for a future of warfare where we seek to adapt to adversary capabilities faster than the adversary adapts to us by leveraging classified and protect DoD data. We ran weapons system hackathons not just as innovation events, but as prototypes to events conducted during war to calibrate capabilities, calibrate tactics, calibrate strategy, and calibrate exercises and training based on the automatic collection of weapons system data. We operated on a theory of future of warfare. This is no longer a theory. Hackathons have changed warfare and are being conducted by Ukrainians and Russians to prototype, test, and rush to field capabilities that supply often a temporary tactical and strategic advantage until the other party adapts. This isn't about developing brand new weapons systems and revolutionary tactics - it's about calibrating the ones we already have to work 1% better every week. Anything that inhibits our speed to field capabilities - bureaucratic process, risk-mitigations, cyber protections and responsible AI analysis - must be considered against the risk that the adversary may adapt faster to us than us to them. This doesn’t mean guardrails should be removed, but it likely means they must be increasingly automated. An update on DoD’s enterprise battle labs and a future hackathon should be dropping soon.
