I'm getting nervous. Not for the Big Meet - that program looks ridiculously good - but because I next Monday will hold an introductory class for all first-year students at the Stockholm School of Economics (The Swedish version of Harvard, Nobel Prize institution etc.). It's the beginning of the obligatory course on Innovation Management, so one of the heavier ones for a school that is Europe's second-largest breeding ground for unicorns, just beaten by Oxford University. Since Oxford is way, way, way larger than SSE, this means that I will speak at Europe's top entrepreneurial business school. This year the course on innovation management will be all about food transformation, its challenges and opportunities. The course is led by the dynamic new Jacob and Marcus Wallenberg professor at the House of Innovation, Valentina Tartari (we at Sweden Foodtech have been somewhat involved in the conception). Let this sink in. Europe's top entrepreneurial business school has identified food as a topic to teach and study. Every student that exits the school in a few years time will have been marinated in food. That's never happened before and I know, because this is my Alma Mater. This will change things and perhaps a few new unicorns will be conceived within the school walls? That SSE has decided to embrace the transformation of food speaks volumes. The transformation of our food sector will affect our societies far beyond today's value chain, which means that the social sciences, like economics, will be front and center in understanding what's going on. The last time around we transformed our food system on the scale that currently confronts us we came up with the Green Revolution. That gave the American scientist Norman Borlaug the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970. If Valentina will get another Nobel Prize for her efforts I don't know, but serious academic engagement with food system transformation and the ensuing policy and societal transformation does seem a worthy cause for future recognitions. I don't feel it's hyperbole to say I have great hopes for SSE becoming one of the leading international academic voices in the food system transformation, it is a fantastic home for those out there that want to engage with and benefit from some of the smartest brains on the planet. 🇪🇸 🚀 FoodTech rocks! Yesterday, I had the opportunity to make a presentation at #Ftalks, the fifth edition of the event created by KM ZERO Food Innovation Hub. 2+1 notes of optimism: 1️⃣ 📊 My presentation was on the state of the ecosystem and the next steps for FoodTech. Things are not great in terms of funding... but what we see pretty clearly in the data is that Europe is doing comparatively well and that we've reached a plateau. So, from now on, we expect things to go up! 2️⃣ 🇪🇸 I was amazed by the many entrepreneurs I met, the exciting products I tasted/tested, and also by the involvement of the local established companies in supporting innovation. Spain has an exciting recipe to support and accelerate its FoodTech ecosystem. 3️⃣ 🌇 My +1: this was my first trip to Valencia, and I am in love with the city => if you have not yet visited the city, you should definitely add it at the top of your priorities. It is a wrap. The Food Tech Congress in Warsaw, one of Europe’s premier events for food tech innovation & investment, brought together 1000+ impactful innovators, venture capitalists, policymakers and the most prominent entrepreneurs to collaborate, push the food industry forward and speed up the revolution.   Two amazing days filled with inspiration, innovation, bold ideas, pitches and incredible food tech insights. Curated networking, numerous discussions, unforgettable experiences and 10 inspiring new themes: food as medicine; alternative proteins; precision fermentation; levelling up safety, security & transparency,; digital from farm to fork; from linear to circular food systems; fighting the food waste battle; the tech-powered future of regenerative agriculture; the future of agritech, and smart money talks.    It was great to see so many of our ground-breaking 2024 startups and EIT Food Accelerator Network alumni attend the event, including Adamo Foods, EcoBean, Esencia Foods, EXOSOMM, GOVA, Holloid and Time-travelling Milkman. Huge congratulations to all the startups that have pitched, exhibited and that have been awarded. A big applause goes to EXOSOMM a startup from our 2024 EIT Food Accelerator Network cohort for winning this year's Food Tech Challenge in the "Enhancing well-being via nutrition" category. 5 years ago I entered our previous “garage -like” offices to start working as Business Development Manager for KM ZERO Food Innovation Hub. Coming from Future Food Institute I believed (and still believe) everything is possible. Since that day we’ve hosted 7 international summits on the future of #food; participated in hundreds of conferences and forums; seen hundreds of startups rise and fall; made new friends and family; lived some of the craziest years in modern history; and experienced multiple versions of myself. I’m not in my 20s anymore (I turned 27 when I got to Valencia) and this helps in making peace with oneself. Fast, much and ego are being replaced by slow, selective and coherent. We are all junkies of the adrenaline rush novelty brings, but I’ve experienced how little of this stays. For this 2024 all ask (to myself) is to keep on doing the hard things. To get rid of the noise. To trust in my gut. And to do everything from a place of love…deep down, you know what works and what doesn’t.
