EDUCATION SERIES: MAP AND COMPASS NAVIGATION 🧭 Becoming competent and confident when using a map and compass to find your way around the hills takes time. But aim to following these hints and tips, when looking to find your way: ✔️ Master the basics: Learn to read a map's key, symbols, and contour lines. Understand compass directions to navigate confidently. ✔️ Orientate yourself: Ensure your map aligns with the actual terrain by using your compass to match north on the map with north in the field. ✔️ Set your course: Use your compass to determine your desired direction, then align the map to your route for accurate navigation. ✔️ Pay attention to landmarks: Identify prominent features on the map and in the landscape to confirm your location and stay on course. ✔️ Measure distance: Use the map's scale and your compass to estimate distances and gauge how far you need to travel. ✔️ Stay updated: Periodically check your progress on the map to avoid straying off course, especially in challenging terrain. ✔️ Plan for contingencies: Familiarize yourself with escape routes, alternate paths, and nearby landmarks in case of unexpected obstacles. ✔️ Practice with pacing: Develop a consistent walking pace to estimate distances covered and enhance your navigation accuracy. Run your own race Learning to tune out of the noise that is constantly around us is vital if we are to focus on our own tempo and stay in alignment with our own grand symphony. We are wise to remember even when we are in our own race there is always others who also make it happen. Tuning out distraction is never easy but noticing that we are losing focus vital if we are to stay focused and achieve what we aspire to do. Do you notice when things around your are seemingly out of your control ? and can you stay focused yourself knowing that you cannot control what happens around you, but you can choose if you are going to respond or react to what is ? One of my biggest learning's was about running my own race and when I talk I take people through my own journey... about what it took to run my own race but how I took my team with me and just how important they were in order for me to run my race. The beginning of my career pathway for athletic training.

In September, I had the opportunity to run a 50-mile ultramarathon in the mountains of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Going into the race, I was anxious about running at altitude, the amount of elevation gain over the 50 miles, and the unknown of the terrain. I made it through and had some key takeaways I believe also pertain to business (and other areas of life): 1. Always seek advice from those who are more experienced: In the months leading up to the race, I was asking every long-distance runner I came across, plus anyone who had hiked or run at altitude, how to prepare and what to be ready for. I learned a tremendous amount that helped me along the way. Find those people around you who you can learn from on a daily basis, ask questions, and make sure to take it all in! 2. Put in the work: I started training on April 10, 2023, for a race that took place on September 16, 2023. There were many days requiring runs in the darkness of the early morning or night, but I got the work in. Find ways to set yourself up for success, establish a plan, and be disciplined in sticking to the plan. 3. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, but challenge you: Although having people who believe in you is key, you also want people who challenge you and push you to be better each day. Find those people who will challenge you to continue pushing to improve each day! 4. Celebrate your victories with those closest to you: The most proud moment of the entire race, was seeing my family at the finish line and getting to run the last quarter mile with my oldest two kids. Such an awesome moment. Make sure to celebrate the victories you experience in life with those who mean the most to you. Life is short, celebrate it and celebrate others!

Today, I want to talk about getting out of your comfort zone. I meant to write this post a few weeks ago but had yet to get around to it. We often have members on our regular sailing team crew that cannot attend a race. While there are many roles in the boat's cockpit that I can move around in, one area that does require a little bit of specialty is working the sailboat's bow. So, as our regular bow person was out of town, another crew member and I worked the bow for a race. We also fly the spinnaker sail in this race, which is a little more labor-intensive. While I knew my way around a sailboat, working the bow was like being on another planet. All the prep work to have the spinnaker ready, how we hauled up the sail, how we jibed and transferred the sail to the other side, and how we took down the sail, still having it ready to be hauled back up again, is all new to me.  While this was not in my typical comfort zone, it was still worth learning. We messed up more than once, but after every incident, we talked about what happened and made changes for the next time. We communicated and learned. The moral of the story in this post is that we all need to be stretched out of our comfort zones from time to time. We will make mistakes and sometimes fail. But with communication and learning being applied, we grow each time. And with time, a new skill and appreciation are earned.
