Yesterday was the first day of my 26th year at Fortum and its predecessors (yes, I know LinkedIn said 21 a few weeks ago…). This of course makes one ponder over life choices, and what your drivers are. I would say that there are four in my case. Not all have been equally important at all times, but they have all been there throughout my career.
1. Sustainability. In 1995 when I left university and started working, I was finalizing my Master’s thesis in City Planning for Sustainable societies. We were just two - three handfuls of engineers in Sweden that had taken M.Sc. degrees specifically aimed at sustainability topics. Baked into others, a bit more, but you get the picture. Sustainability was a biologist’s topic back then. When I came to Stockholm MFO on the first of February 1999, I started working with sustainability criteria in public procurement, and since then, sustainability has been a part of every position I have held. Fortum has had this on the agenda the whole time.
2. Work-life balance. This one has gone from good to bad and back in an oscillating manner over the years. Fortum has, though, offered the possibility to, in periods, prioritise for example family when this has been necessary. Working 80% during ten years to be able to support better when our kids were small is just an example. Now, most Nordic companies wouldn’t question that, but in 2002, when I started my part-time stint, it was certainly not a given.
3. The urge to gain new learnings. Fortum as a company has promoted job rotation. I’ve been given, and taken, the possibilites to do so many times over, and have done many different things over the years. I’ve worked for or with more or less the whole value chain in the hydro power, including trading, I’ve been in IT and process development, I’ve done internal auditing, innovation, and had the priviledge to start and build up the Hydrogen (now Power 2 X) business area from scratch. And this isn’t all. I learn new things every day!
4. Being able and allowed to influence. Wherever I am, I want to be able to influence where the company goes in the field I currently work. I’ve been fortunate to actually have that possibility in most of the positions I’ve held. And, it has been very clear that when that is lacking, I lose a lot of motivation. I think Fortum has, over the years, been pretty good at finding fittting positions for our people, and if there is a mismatch, in the end a new position has often been found that fits, instead of having people move out from the company.
As a last point, I’d like to give a shout out to a few colleagues that have been special over the years, for different reasons. Thanks Kent Andersson, Mikael Waller, Göran Hult, Birgitta Adell, Kent Pettersson, Markku Orvall, Antero Heikkilä, Hannu Helminen, Jukka Huovinen, Johan Renström, Heli Antila, Mervi Hynönen, Sebastian Johansen and Ninad Mutatkar. And, thanks Fortum for the token of recogniton! This is what it now looks like!
