Name change for historic Chamber of Commerce Lancaster and District Chamber of Commerce is changing its name for only the fourth time in its 126-year history. Each name change has reflected the differing emphasis on the Chamber's activities and priorities in the area and the new name, the Lancaster and Morecambe Chamber of Commerce is a perfect encapsulation of that philosophy. To whom it concerns I'm disabled does this mean I don't want to do things with my life, a good mum a good friend or wife? NO ! I love living ,yes I'm limited as to what I can achieve and yes I also require help and support. I'm 48 years old . I became disabled 12 years ago . Nothing can prepare you for all the changes that happen and the amount you have to beg for life changing equipment ie wheelchairs, adapted bathrooms , pads etc. For the first few years of my disability I had to use a camping toilet in my hallway and sleep in a reclining chair. This is the norm for people with disabilities. Services that are supposed to support people like me are limited, underfunded and not working in a way to help in areas that they should due to the communication chain being broken. The support that is supposed to be in place for young carers who's lives are forever changed due to a parent becoming ill or disabled is very dependent on the area in which you live . My area is poor in supporting these children adapt to a new way of life. I would love to see a much better approach to disabled people and make things easier to get support for disabled people to be part of a community not a separate entity. I would love to be able to participate in community events but I'm not able to because the care that I have is limited to certain times and I cannot book a respite break because actually trying to get extra funding for a carer to come with me is near impossible to organise but I can't can't book until I know that I will have the appropriate care to go with. So what can I do? If your care is funded by the council then you can apply for direct payments if your care is funded by the NHS (continuing healthcare) you can get a personal Healthcare budget. Both these are where you can organise and budget for your own care needs but you have to be assessed to qualify and this process is several months long (at least). I propose a fresh look at how families are supported. I suggest that the key is to have a more united approach. Perhaps try a completely new approach that is designed and managed by the people who are experts about what we need and desire. We should be our own voice for our future. You should listen to what helps us ,what hinders us and suggestions as to make things better. We are the experts in our field. So employ us to help. If people got the help they needed it would increase mental and physical well-being. It would ease the pressure that families, spouses and young carers feel. There needs to be an overhaul of current care and we need to be part of it.
