99 years ago today, 10 municipal leaders from across the country sat down together in Lawrence, Kansas for the first official meeting of the National League of Cities. On this important anniversary, I took some time to reflect on how much has changed and what has remained the same for our incredible organization in these last 100 years. Frederick Douglass: abolitionist, orator, and advocate for economic empowerment. He went to Rochdale a slave, left a free man and the ties he had formed helped to pave way for the beginning of the cooperative movement. As we celebrate the #BlackHistoryMonth, let’s continue his legacy by promoting the cooperative principles of economic empowerment for all. Interested in Fredrick’s story? Some important words from this 2022 piece that we're reflecting on this summer from Joseph Phelan and Jung Hee Choi. "Understandably, election campaigns focus on the short-term. But narrative change is a long-term project. Building narrative power for our movements requires a healthy ecosystem that combines leadership development, relevant tools and technology, substantial and sustained financial resources, and containers for collaboration and coordination. Our opposition has had decades to build their organizing and narrative infrastructure; our strategy needs to be similarly long-term and similarly wide-ranging." At BLIS, we are deeply committed to the arduous yet essential task of uprooting narratives that were planted over 400 years ago, narratives that allowed for millions of acres of land to be stolen, narratives that allowed for Black people to be enslaved for over 240 years and narratives that have allowed for a continuous and violent cycle of domination. Dismantling them is life-long work. https://lnkd.in/eYFdFA5H

In the first part of this session, we will become acquainted with what ethical leadership entails and discuss three sets of decision-making skills ethical leaders can apply when faced with organizational challenges, whether they are systems-based or interpersonal. In the panel, we will do a deep dive into the various components that make up purpose, and our three amazing panelists will discuss through their own experiences how their personal sense of purpose relates to the shaping of their professional identity and how they lead their respective organizations. It’s going to be a great session. #purpose #ethicalleadership #leadership Emory University Emory University School of Law

What can we do about Columbus’ housing shortage, have a look at the latest article my colleagues Brandon Carrus , Duwain Pinder, Ben Safran, Brian Parro and Seth Myers wrote
Columbus, Ohio has an opportunity to be on the forefront of addressing one of the United States' toughest challenges: alleviating the housing and homelessness crisis. As the fastest growing population in the Midwest, Columbus faces similar challenges to many cities experiencing significant economic gains. While many are experiencing the benefits of such tremendous economic growth, others are being left behind due to rapidly rising home prices, a shrinking supply of affordable housing, and a lack of robust public-private infrastructure to keep up with the rising tide. My colleagues Duwain Pinder, Ben Safran, Brian Parro, Seth Myers and I have developed a perspective on this challenge with a focus on exploring potential paths to enable sustainable and inclusive growth. We believe that through public-private collaboration and changes to current systems, Columbus can be a role model for others. #sustainablegrowth #housingmarket #homelessness #equityandinclusion #columbusohio

Ever considered an Internship? Can you believe that Michael Lake was my first intern decades ago? Maybe we both made our own luck, but Michael genuinely transformed our business within a couple of months, coming in with zero domain knowledge. This was before he got his triple degree and was asked by Chelsea Clinton if my kids in the photo on his White House desk were his. That experience set my reference point for what an internship can be. So much so that I share with new Interns the concept of Imposter Syndrome very early. My experience is that when given the right environment interns consistently exceed everyone’s expectations, especially their own. It helps that we are never afraid of the brightest person in the room. Thanks to Rob Metcalfe, we use this simple BECKS model – Behaviour, Environment, Clarity, Knowledge & Skills. We interview for specific behaviours and all we ask is that each individual brings their authentic self to work (the behaviours are already baked in). It is our job as a business to deliver the E, C, K&S: - create the environment for success through people, processes and technology - be clear in our expectations, objectives, norms of behaviour etc - create a learning environment that delivers, at a minimum, the requisite knowledge and skills. When the internship is over, these highly capable interns have their journeys to traverse and like any parent encouraging their children to travel it is with mixed emotions when they inevitably leave (sometimes years later). In start-ups compounding is key. By living vicariously through the lives of our interns, I feel luckier every day. I’ve got to watch Michael create LeadingCities from a concept to a network of cities focused on collaborative urban research. The direction, vision, tools and opportunities are then accessible to any municipal government in the world. Keep smiling and making the world a better place every day, Michael.
President Clinton's passion for public service never ceases to inspire me. Attending this year's Clinton Global Initiative was a great opportunity to take action, connect with like-minded individuals, and make commitments for change. It was also wonderful to reconnect with old White House friends at the reunion. As President Clinton reminded us, this week marks the 30th anniversary of his creation of AmeriCorps, just one of the many incredible impacts of the Clinton Administration. #ClintonGlobalInitiative #PublicService #AmeriCorps

"The journey towards healing and racial justice for AFP must involve truth-telling and amplifying courageous testimonies.
