Educational Consultant | MTSS | School Psychology | Coaching, Training, and Learning | Dual Language Learning | Transform Learning Environments Through Trust, Inclusion, and Equity
This article has good information on supporting our students' academic growth. Two key points I think are particularly relevant: -Address social-emotional learning needs while addressing academic ones -Provide intervention in addition to providing core instruction, not replacing it. Successfully supporting our students necessitates addressing the whole child's needs and making sure there is equitable access to interventions.
"We really wanted to shine light on the evidence and what we know can have an impact on student achievement, as well as the interventions that we know [and] the design conditions that need to be there to drive those gains," said an NWEA researcher, discussing a new report about how schools can optomize K-12 student learning recovery interventions. State summative #assessments are a powerful tool to focus and inform policymakers, educators, and families on student mastery of rigorous academic standards. Most state tests, however, are disconnected from what happens in #classrooms everyday. In this piece, Education Week highlights states like #Montana that have seized opportunities to innovate and set an example for other states to evolve their assessment systems to meet the moment. The pandemic forever changed how #students learn and how #teachers teach; it’s time to measure both in a meaningful, modern way.

In 2014, an average of 1.2 million students dropped out of high school, leading in part to the enactment of the Every Student Succeeds Act in 2015. This new legislation emphasized tiered support for students, recognizing the inadequacy of a one-size-fits-all approach in education. Multi-tiered systems of Support (MTSS) have since emerged as an effective way to ensure equitable access to resources and support for all students, improving education outcomes and fostering a positive school climate. If you're a school leader looking to implement or improve tiered support frameworks, read more about MTSS and our best practice recommendations now!

High schools represent a crucial inflection point as we rethink how the K-12 sector connects to what comes next. Today's article in The74Million highlights a new study about how six New England high schools are shifting how they prepare students for what comes next. One of the most important questions these schools were asking was "how can we set [students] up with a corresponding, individualized plan that can help them on that path to a good life?" https://lnkd.in/e7QGTbDa KnowledgeWorks National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE)

More than 14 percent of students in K-12 schools have an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). These are plans to ensure reasonable accommodations are made for learning differences. Of course, these accommodations are also offered in colleges and universities. Most campuses (including Otterbein) have dedicated staff to support students with such needs. And they are the best at what they do! But there is a trend. Every year (without fail in my whole career) there are students who had an IEP in high school who decide not to request accommodations in college. Let me be blunt: This is a bad plan. College has lots of transitions and challenges. Among them are higher academic expectations in an environment that requires more self-motivation than students are probably used to. To decide, in the midst of all that, to remove the support that students have had access to through K-12 rarely works out well. The motivation is laudable. Many students and parents, having seen success in high school, want to see if the student can do without the support. My advice is to delay big changes in support until after the first year of college. In other words, one transition at a time! #HigherEducation #LearningDifferences #Otterbein #CoalitionForTheCommonGood

The accountability and action demanded by the author of this op-ed regarding the state of our education system begins with making the teaching profession more attractive - attracting the best of the best to our classrooms to engage and inspire our children. Now, when I say it begins with making the teaching profession more attractive, there are many moves that need to be made in order for that to happen - including paying top teachers what they should be making, just like other professions, and decreasing the micro-managing that is taking place in schools across the country. Obviously, there's more to strengthening our schools than the above, but this is where we need to start in my opinion. #education #learning #teaching #publicschools
