"I'm happy to be here!" I'll get back to that statement in a minute. As a military kid, my Dad would take me to the local airshow every year. I became obsessed with one thing after my first show . . . 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐬! The speed. The precision. The acrobatics. The entire experience blew me away and left a lasting impression that resonates today. Over the years, I have studied The Blue Angels and watched several documentaries. Even more impressive than their flying was their unrelenting pursuit of excellence through unmatched attention to detail and accountability. What makes The Blue Angels so great can also translate into being a great leader and developing high-performing teams. Here are the 4 things I've taken from "The Blues" and you can too! 𝟏. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - Each mission (show) consists of a brief and debrief where each pilot's performance is meticulously discussed and critiqued by their peers. No judgments but simple direct feedback to make each pilot better during the next mission. Their lives depend on it. 𝟐. 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 (𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭) 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 - 3 practices a day pulling up to 7 G's! The Blue Angels go through a physically and mentally demanding schedule to pursue excellence while striving for perfection with every show. 𝟑. 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝟐.𝟎 - Flying a 32,000 lb. F-18 Hornet at speeds over 400 mph, the pilots have a standard of accountability that is unfathomable to most people. They hold their team to the highest standards. 𝟒. 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞 - Each Blue Angel pilot understands the unique privilege they possess. It's an honor to be part of their team, and it doesn't last forever. During the briefs and debriefs, each member ends their commentary with "𝑰'𝒎 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆!" So . . . how does this all translate to us mere mortals on the ground? We can take each of the lessons and apply them to how we lead ourselves and the teams around us. ☑ 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - Leave nothing to chance and make sure everyone has a clear understanding of the mission. ☑ 𝐏𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐬 - Take consistent action where it becomes automatic. ☑ 𝐁𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 - Hold yourself to the highest standards and create a culture of open communication and honest feedback with a growth mindset. ☑ 𝐁𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥 - Understand the honor of being a leader and never take it for granted. You aren't just entrusted with someone's career but their livelihood as well. Create more leaders and even better people! We all have dreams as a kid. Mine was to be a Blue Angel pilot. I remember it like it was yesterday and when it all made sense! And it has stuck with me throughout the years, and I'll never forget . . . Grammy Jo! Growing up as a kid, Grammy Jo's house was full of love, a place for the family to gather, and so many memories were created. 👨👩👧👦 At Christmas, we would gather at her house, and she made sure every single person (30+ people) had a present to open. 🎄 Despite her meager earnings and simple lifestyle, Grammy Jo was the most giving person I have ever met. If she had a dollar, she'd gladly give it away to help someone else in need. This lesson was burned in my brain and heart, and though she passed several years ago, her legacy remains not only in me but also in her family, which she blessed with her giving heart. Today, as a father, husband, friend, and business owner, I try to emulate her generosity to others regardless of the circumstances. Sure . . . there are times that are harder than others, but by simply giving to someone else in need, you become rich beyond measure. Man, do you ever feel lost when trying to set goals? So much to think about . . . the what, the how, the why, etc.! Use this simple framework we call "W5" to write clearer goals and vision: #1: What are you grateful for? Focus on the past success you've had and show gratitude for the journey you have already taken. It's important to look back and see how far you've already come! #2: Where do you see yourself? Visualization is a powerful tool. Take the time to visualize what the future looks like, feels like, and will be. See yourself in that moment! #3: When do I hope to achieve these goals? Set specific milestones that are both short-term and long-term. The short-term goals will fuel the fire, while the long-term goals are the guiding light. #4: Why is this important to me? This could be #1, but it's critical to understand "why" you're going on this journey. WHY do all the work? WHY make the sacrifices? Answer that and let it serve as your motivation! #5: Who do I need to become to make this goal a reality? Achieving newer, bigger goals typically requires doing things you haven't done before. Change can be crippling for some people. Embrace the change, and learn to love the challenges. The payoff is massive! This simple framework lets you be introspective of the past, present, and future. "𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠" 𝐨𝐫 "𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭-𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠" clients (done respectfully, of course) can be a major catalyst for your business growth. 💡 A study by Cerulli Associates showed 𝟐𝐱 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 for advisors focused on 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭s rather than a scattered approach. 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭: Clearly define the characteristics of your new "ideal client." For my teams, I suggest the tripe "A" approach. 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐬 - Not a minimum, but a baseline of assets that are deserving of your full product and service offering. 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞 - Are they open and engaged with feedback? Do they bring positive energy to your business and life? 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐜𝐲 - Are they you're biggest advocates and for their COI who they know could benefit from your services? 𝟐. 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭 - Objectively assess how well your current clients fit your new "ideal client" profile. 𝟑. 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 - If a client no longer aligns with your goals, have a transparent conversation and offer solutions about transitioning them to a more suitable advisor. 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 "𝐰𝐢𝐧-𝐰𝐢𝐧" 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. You free yourself to focus on more high-impact activities, and your existing clients get the specialized attention they deserve.
