The revival of vintage Japanese music has become a trend that’s broken mainstream, even getting a Japanese ambient and new age music compilation album from the 1980s nominated for “Best Historical Album” at the 2020 Grammys. While the album didn’t win, it still marked a historical moment for older Japanese music gaining more popularity and recognition in the era of today. This ongoing revival of Japanese music is all thanks to the magic of the internet, with YouTube and other online communities allowing users to find music from decades ago. One of the popular music genres of the 80s in Japan, City Pop, a blend of international disco, funk, and R&B with an upscale feel, has had one of the most prominent renaissances online, with thousands of videos uploaded by fans to YouTube, a dedicated online community on Reddit, and even City Pop-themed DJ nights at clubs around the world. On the opposite end of the spectrum, another genre that has been given a second life through YouTube is ambient or environmental music. It's a minimalist and soothing sound with a Japanese twist. Whether you’re a fan of the experimental upbeat City Pop genre or prefer the calming effects of ambient music, there’s never been a better time to explore vintage Japanese music online! New Post: What ‘Ella Baila Sola’ Taught Us About The Future Of Latin Music - https://lnkd.in/gMCdwMaU - The sound that dominated popular Spanish-language music in 2023 wasn’t represented at all on the Billboard Hot 100 until two years ago, when Gera MX and Christian Nodal’s country-tinged “Botella Tras Botella” debuted at No. 60 and made history as the first regional Mexican song on the chart. Since then, the genre’s presence on the ranking has exploded as a new crop of stars has evolved the music’s sound and look, borrowing from hip-hop, trap and rap to build on its traditional instruments of guitar, accordion and more. As a result, these artists have nurtured a new generation of fans for a genre with foundations that date back over a century. This year, more than 35 regional Mexican tracks have entered the Hot 100, highlighted by Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s blockbuster smash, “Ella Baila Sola,” which also made history when it reached the chart’s top five. This record year for regional Mexican music, or música Mexicana, has been powered by not only superstar collaborations — like Grupo Frontera’s team-up with Bad Bunny and Fuerza Regida pairing with Marshmello — but also support from major labels eager to partner with the independents that have long dominated the genre. In the first half of 2023 alone, overall consumption of regional Mexican music jumped 42.1%, topping all other genres but K-pop, according to Luminate. “For decades, Mexican music has played a significant role in Latin music, leaving a profound impact on the global musical landscape,” says Manny Prado, vp of marketing and A&R at Interscope Records. “Finally, it has gained the acknowledgment it deserves.” This year in particular, international collaborations have propelled the sound into uncharted territories, and no other Latin genre has gained the traction of regional Mexican. Related Regional Mexican Music Isn't Just Having a Moment — It's Been a Movement 12/11/2023 Its newfound popularity is rooted in many things, but particularly in its indie support, followed by multinational distribution partnerships with major labels. In June, Fuerza Regida frontman Jesús Ortiz Paz signed a worldwide deal with Cinq Music to distribute his own label, Street Mob Records, which he launched in 2018. The move followed a deal that Fuerza Regida signed with Sony Music Latin last year through a partnership with its indie label, Rancho Humilde. The strategy also worked for Washington state-based sibling trio Yahritza y Su Esencia, which signed to Columbia Records in partnership with Sony Music Latin and its indie Lumbre Music (which had discovered and signed the act eight months prior).

Would you buy your favorite music album today? Your answer would likely be no, given the current landscape, but… Since my last post about the power of music, many people have shared how essential music is to their lives. They say it helps them stay productive and focused on what matters. Today, we often take for granted that the music we love is available for free. However, this wasn’t the case 20 years ago, during the 2000s to 2010s. Back then, the music we listen to today came at a cost. Artists received royalties, but a significant portion went to the platforms distributing their music. This was a challenging era for musicians. Many protested, arguing that their talent was not being fairly compensated. The primary issue was rampant piracy, people were stealing music from the internet rather than purchasing it ethically, resulting in artists not receiving their deserved royalties. As a regular person, it’s easy to get temptation to steal music for free at that time. However, once you understand what musicians were going through and how music platforms were exploiting them, it changes your perspective. Thanks to the intense protests by musicians against these platforms, we now live in an era where artists are fairly compensated for their talent, and exploitation has significantly decreased. We all should appreciate and value the music we love by supporting the artists who enrich our lives with their talent.
