I love this op-ed by filmmaker Ema Ryan Yamazaki. Being hāfu (or as my mom always put it, "daburu," as in "double," or really, just multiracial) is just as part of what it means to be #japanese as someone who is "fully" Japanese (which, really; what does that mean anyway in the larger scheme of human history, migration patterns, etc). I love the photos in this op-ed, too. https://lnkd.in/eeMuvhnH Incidentally, Ema's name sounded familiar--like I had corresponded with her before or something--and sure enough, I had interviewed her in 2012 for a website called Denizen! Even then, Ema was thinking deeply about these issues. (The byline on the piece is incorrect; Steph was my editor and the founder of the website, but the article was by your's truly!) https://lnkd.in/ejvx7w3x

There’s plenty of drama, action, political tension churning in the swirling battles & grand armies fronting 17th-century Japan at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. The treatment is raw, intense & brutal yet never voyeuristic. The narrative leans towards politics & philosophies & keeps you entranced in its luxurious enrichment of Eastern mystique. This is a sprawling period drama, a riveting re-imagining that finds strength in words and artistic accomplishments rarely experienced before.

👉🏻English teacher 👉🏻founder/CGO/trainer at Leon's grammarCORE & author of 📗 ONE RULE ENGLISH: Why Grammar S*cks & How to Fix It 👉🏻discover the One Rule approach for English teachers
Awesome English: do you know The Ballad of Buster Scruggs? Arguably it ranks as one of the better films of 2018. It won a Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay at the Venice International Film Festival and got three Academy Award nominations. This 2018 Coen brothers' American Western anthology features some extraordinary examples of non-standard and grammatically incorrect English. It should have won an Oscar for incorrect-English-that-works. Watch The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix, if only for its incomparable Wild West English, and try to spot this fine example: "She hadn't ought to have did it." I find that line exceptionally beautiful - a work of art. It's a far cry from officially correct English, but who needs a grammar lesson in the face of such awesome language? Leave a like and a comment, SHARE this post in your network, SMILE! and have a great (Summer's) day! #tesol #englishteacher #teachersfollowteachers 📷 original image by Timur M. on Unsplash
