Japan is gearing up for the Olympic Games in Paris this year with the newest lineup of 27 swimmers qualified for individual and relay events. It should be noted, that Japan typically sets its qualifying times faster than the Olympic Standard Time set by the World Aquatics. The 27 chosen swimmers were a mix of veterans and newcomers with standout performances. 2-time Olympic gold medalist Yui Ohashi and experienced Olympic medalist Daiya Seto secured their spots for the 200m Individual Medley, however, they faced tough competition from young talented swimmers such as seventeen-year-old Mio Narita, Tomoyuki Matsushia who surpassed Seto in the final race, and Ageha Tanigawa who beat out Ohashi for the women’s 400m Individual Medley. Although the competition was tough, Seto mentioned he was happy to see young swimmers improving and hopes to lead the way for the next generation since he has been competing for a long time. Perhaps one of the most inspiring races of the trials was Rikako Ikee’s return after battling leukemia in 2020. Ikee competed in the Tokyo 2020 Games in relay events but now earned her place in an individual event for the first time since 2016 with the 100m butterfly event. Sixteen-year-old Mizuki Hirai, who won the final, also qualified and is excited to be on an Olympic team with her swimming idol, Rikako Ikee. Now that 2023 is about to end, I was reviewing the top performers in swimming globally. And here's what I found out: 💡 The U.S., Australia, and China were the world’s strongest swimming nations by depth of performers in 2023. 💡 American men had 33 (the most) top-10 swimmers among all countries, followed by Australia and China at 14 each. 💡 Among women, the U.S. had 52 top-10 performers, but Australia was a stronger competitor with 30 top-10 results. 💡 Added together, the United States had 85 top-10 performers, followed by Australia in second position with 44 and China in third place with 32. Great Britain had a total of 13 top-10 finishes. 💡 These numbers are different to the total medal count at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships for swimming, where the US led with 38 medals, followed by Australia (25), and China (16). Great Britain finished with 8 medals in Fukuoka, Japan. While the top-10 performances differ from the medal count, I believe it is important to consider various metrics to gauge a nation’s sporting prowess. Thoughts? #YearInReview #2023 #Swimming

The future is now: modern(ising) pentathlon. The classic setting of Alexandria, Egypt is where we found the future of modern pentathlon. UIPM - World Pentathlon Modern Pentathlon Junior Championships landed there on yesterday, 24th June. These young competitors arrive at the sport at a time of transition. The modern pentathlon governing body, the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne has decided to make some major changes to the sport. At this summer's #Olympics the semi-finals and final will be condensed into a 90 minute programme with shooting, fencing, swimming, horse jumping and cross country running only separated by short breaks. At present competitions can run over many hours, or even days in different locations. This new format will take place in a single setting. As if this were not enough - after #Paris2024 an obstacle course will replace horse riding. These changes were announced in a direct attempt to maintain the sport's prominence at the Olympics. As some feel it is pandering to the powers of TV, there are many unhappy pentathletes. The UK's Joe Choong MBE has stated that he will walk away from the sport once the changes arrive. The youngsters at Alexandria will be the first generation to see the even more modern pentathlon as the new normal. Time to discover who the champions of the future are. #pentathlon #theuipm #modernpentathlon #istaa #istaaorg #sportstravel #sportshospitality #goistaamembers #strongertogether

Transformation of the technique in just 4 months
Exciting Progress in Paralympian Swimmer's Technique Transformation in Just 4 Months! 🏊♂️ Witness remarkable changes in the swimming technique of our Paralympian swimmer. Despite no apparent improvement in the SWOLF metric, a closer look reveals a profound transformation. The right arm strokes have undergone a significant enhancement, showcasing a more refined stroke pattern with speed variations. The left arm strokes have also shown marked progress, with consistent maximum and minimum speeds, indicating a newfound rhythm. This enhanced rhythm is further evidenced by data demonstrating consistent stroke times and reduced deviation in Time-per-Stroke for both arms, reflecting a more purposeful approach to freestyle swimming. Noteworthy is the swimmer's growing trust in her right arm, highlighted through extensive testing aimed at addressing asymmetry issues. Various tests involving paddles and pull buoys have been conducted to compensate for physical imbalances and delve deeper into the root causes of this asymmetry. Moreover, this newfound rhythm has propelled the swimmer to meet the stringent #Paris2024 criterion for the 400m freestyle event, underscoring the tangible progress and dedication invested in this journey. myswiedge.com

With 42 Olympic champions leading its delegation, China is set to embark on its most ambitious Olympic outing abroad at the upcoming Paris Games. Among the 236 disciplines in which it will compete, Chinese athletes are expected to win multiple golds in traditional sports, particularly athletics, swimming, gymnastics, diving, shooting, boxing, and weightlifting. Yet this year, the game is changing. With the recent introduction of skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing in the last Olympics, and now breakdancing — sports scarcely older in China than the country’s Olympians who will be competing in them in Paris — new disciplines are set to test the boundaries of tradition and talent. With limited experience in these sports, how has China adapted to prepare these young athletes for the biggest sporting stage of all? Read more: https://ow.ly/NSaj50SCWXs

When it comes to commitments in sports, should offers once made and accepted be rescinded? The recent development in the International Olympic Committee – IOC #Singapore Swimming Team raises some thought-provoking questions. The case of Quah Ting Wen highlights the challenges athletes face. What are your thoughts on this dilemma? How can we best support and uphold commitments to athletes striving for excellence?
