Today marks my one year anniversary leading this brilliant team at EY. And what a year it's been. Professional services is unlike any other business environment I've ever worked in. A co-operative or 1000's of entrepreneurs, the pace of change and the drive to do more never takes a breath. Someone, somewhere is always trying something new - looking to move things forward another important step for the business, our clients or the communities we serve. It's why when colleagues say it can take a full year to feel like you really understand EY, they're only partly joking. To wrap arms around all of this energy, innovation and movement and seek some consistent stories to tell to an external audience is no easy task. (And by no means is it one we have cracked just yet.) But, one year in (I hope, the first of many) I can see the path we're on and the destination we're heading for - and I like the look of both. Curveballs will arrive without doubt. And brand new questions will arise but I look forward to that, knowing I work surrounded by the very best people to help answer them. A massive thank you to my incredible team for all your support so far, and to colleagues across the business for your time, patience, challenge and inspiration. Pic of me this time last year, you can see the fear. What the hell was I doing? Betraying EY by leaving. This is an organisation which has been so good to me, creating opportunities for me to grow my career from senior consultant to director. Funded my coaching qualification and given me loads of willing coaching clients to practise my craft on. What the hell was I doing? Cutting loose from a safety net of lots of incredibly smart people across EY. Having some hugely trusted leaders, confidantes, advisors, sponsors - who had all helped me to grow my career. This was all seriously giving me the wobbles. Shame I’d already handed my notice in and had only three weeks left. I had to urgently get past those wobbles. So I dug deep, looked inside myself, wracked my brains, spent sleepless nights to come up with the answer. And do you know what…. This was 100% the wrong thing to do. So lucky and grateful that a couple of my Global Leader confidants asked if we could talk, rather unsubtly I think they were trying to use lunch, wine, gin anything as bribery to make me stay. I did something cheeky, once I’d persuaded them this lady was not for turning… I ASKED FOR THEIR HELP. (and I’m pretty sure they were delighted I did). Turns out it’s a total gamechanger to ask people for help. Who knew? By asking for help I got so much more than I bargained for: 🧠 Wisdom, advice, clarity on what would set me and my business up for success. 🔋Massive confidence boost, no one thought I was crazy, in fact I think a couple of the EY geniuses I spoke with might have even been impressed with my ideas. ☕️ A support network that’s lasted way past me leaving, cheering me on from the sidelines and giving great advice when I need it. ⭐️My start up business lesson no.1 - get out of your own head and don’t think all the answers have to come from you. It's 6 days now that we are part of EY (in case you missed it: https://lnkd.in/eD7MPv4t) and many of you have expressed curiosity on the Teal Dot and how it is going. Well, first of all, after 1 week I can't tell you a lot of how it actually is going, but I can share some things myself and the team have been trying (basically what we have told our clients the last 8 years who wanted to experiment, create an island of self-organisation, empowered or an actual Teal Dot: ✍ Take some minutes and reflect on your key working principles as a team. Only way to stay true to those is to actually know those and make it explicit to everyone. I am not following to jeopardize certain things and that's alright - but only fair if I tell others. 💥 Be ready for some constructive tension and dialogue to learn - our setup wasn't perfect and so isn't the one EY had. We seem to be open to both learn from each other. Sometimes a bit explosive, but really a good journey after all! 💋 Don't put lipstick on a pig. Staying transparent and honest, not overselling and also making clear that the transition will decrease efficiency and sometimes effectiveness seems to help me and us to deliver on our commitments. 🤼 We are keeping our role-based setup and many of the roles we had. Others get adjusted as we talk. It's good to have some wrestling with ourselves and everyone on what's actually needed. Living organism :-) 🗨 Talk, talk, talk! One of my mottos: If you want to keep an enemy, stay far away. If you wanna lose one, get close. Understanding (without necessarily always agreeing) will only happen if you talk to each other! #meettheteam Meet Chris Moore. Behind those glasses, in his full expansive self, he is a wellspring of fierce focus and insight. His entrepreneurial spirit lets him flourish at any x.Co. Our paths converged several years ago at EY and now I have the privilege of working together at PwC. It is a beauty to watch him undertake projects with complexity, typically laden with challenges and skepticism. His determination, his remarkable capability to steer through the complexities, like a skilled mariner charting a course through turbulent waters, to not only address the multifaceted concerns of all the stakeholders but also harness the potential of each of the projects to its fullest. His ability to push boundaries to question assumptions, makes me push mine. And embrace the road less traveled. His approach to meet a problem at the cross-section of business & technology to drive impact is exceptional. His unwavering belief that solutions to any problem NOT found at this cross-section are not only not lasting, but superfluous and fleeting. His familiarity to navigating unknown terrains is masterclass. Collaborating with him teaches me the art of navigating uncharted waters. Moreover, it invigorates me and propels me to explore novel domains with renewed confidence. Over the years, our relationship has evolved. I'd like to think he reverse mentors me now, but we organically arrived here. Not planned.
