From Shy Kid to Chatterbox: Why My Kids Avoid Grocery Trips with Me! Is it hard to be shy and the new kid? Absolutely. From kindergarten to high school, I changed school systems at least five times. Most transitions took me from smaller to larger schools: 1. Kindergarten & 1st Grade: 5-6 kids per grade. 2. 2nd - 4th Grade: 20 kids per grade. 3. 5th & 6th Grade: 120 kids per grade. 4. Junior High: 500 kids per grade. 5. Middle of 8th Grade: Moved to a smaller school than my junior high. Every first day filled me with dread. I saw myself as a quiet, shy person who needed time to adjust and get to know people. However, these experiences transformed me. Now, I'm someone who's never met a stranger—I'll strike up a conversation with anyone. (Just ask my kids—they get annoyed at how chatty I am at the grocery store or mall!) What I Learned: • Overcoming Shyness: Being the new kid repeatedly pushed me out of my comfort zone, helping me become more outgoing. • Finding Connections: I realized the importance of putting myself out there to find my group and make meaningful connections. • Talking to New People: My job today involves getting to know new people, and I don't even think about being shy anymore. Why This Matters for My Clients: • Relatability: Having been the new person so many times, I understand how tough it can be. This empathy helps me make clients feel comfortable sharing deeply personal financial details. • Building Trust: My goal is to turn initial meetings into friendships, making it easier for clients to open up about their goals and dreams. • Creating Effective Plans: When clients feel comfortable, we can build a truly effective retirement plan tailored to their needs. 🔗 Ready to discuss your financial goals with someone who understands the importance of trust and connection? What a cutie you were James! You are just like my son. He's never met a stranger either. Although as he became a teenager, he did have some dread on the way to a new environment. But it always dissipates the moment he walks through the door. I believe change is what did that for him as well. He had two kindergartens, grade 1-2, grade 3, grade 4-5, grade 6-7, all in different cities, with grade 8-9 in Malaysia before he began homeschooling during covid. We moved a lot with my work :) Today, he does the same online. It's a wonderful way to be.

Yes, I can relate as I've had similar experiences growing up. It's interesting how that transition takes place. My biggest move came when I left New Jersey to attend college in South Florida. The change was daunting, and being more introverted made it even more challenging. But, looking back, it was these transitions that shaped me into the person I am today—adaptable, resilient, and always looking to connect with others. So, to anyone facing similar challenges, remember this: Each new environment is an opportunity for growth. Embrace the change.

I thought they'd avoid the grocery store b/c it's one of MY least favorite life activities. So maybe it's theirs as well :) The next time I have to go to the grocery will be too soon. James E. Mayer, Jr., CRPS, C(k)P

I thought my kids were the only ones to dread going to the grocery store or Costco with me 😁 We are very similar James and once you feel comfortable talking to strangers on a regular basis, you look forward to every future human interaction. It's the part of our job that no amount of classes or schooling will ever prepare you for.

The greatest ability you can have is the ability to relate. To relate to their upbringing. To relate to their financial goals. To relate their core beliefs. It makes it easy when you can relate and empathize. You become their favourite in doing so. James
