The innovations developing for storing renewable energy blow my mind. Really critical challenges for decarbonizing our energy grid (and especially for creating resilient micro-grids). All of these solutions are also "batteries" just not in the physical sense we're used to. And they are all direct competitors to the lithium ion battery producers and also more sustainable. Ultimately it will all come down to scale and profitability. Nice to see Finland represented in the article, need to keep an eye on Pornainen.

This is a moral imperative that we make the investment required to switch to renewable energy far faster then currently planned. It also happens to be the path to a booming economy for many decades to come. Good news - if we act fast. A study has calculated that moving the world to 100% renewables would cost $62 trillion, but the removal of the cost of mining, processing, transporting and handling fossil fuels would result in a short payback period. On the other hand, the costs of continuing to use planet heating fossil fuels will be vast - in terms of food security, economies, ecosystems, infrastructure, conflict and human health. From the article - “Mark Jacobson and his colleagues at Stanford University have published a new study in the journal Energy & Environmental Science that claims 145 of the world’s nations could switch to 100% renewable energy in a few years using renewable energy technologies available today.”
